Glow plug problems
i run the boat out in the lake ,bring it in for one reason or nother or adjustment,i i stop the engine with controller , n every time i go to restart it .... nothing , so i take plug out touch it to igniter wont glow..... if i touch coil will start to glow, i went through 7 plugs today n alot more in days past..am starting to think a drug habit be cheaper... the boat is a sw32, new 32 dyn , just started 2nd gallon of dynamite sport fuel 30% n 18% oil i believe it to be , both hi an low screws are set on rich side , it is muddyto rev, n getting smoke from exhaust,i couldnt find any leaks in exhaust coupler or preasure nipple ,( was thinking it was sucking in cool air at shut down n shockin glow plug, kinda like burnin a valve ) the coil on the plugs looks shinny n not distorted, i'm useing kb-hp long reach plugs n os a3 , the shims been removed from under button, only copper remains.....an the temp at lake today was 45deg if that factors into it ........i'm in need of some educating.....

RE: Glow plug problems
I've run K&B plugs and have had nothing but trouble with them. Other swear by them, I swear at them! The glow ignitor that you're using may be pushing too many amps through the coil, frying it.
I've got a power panel ignitor with the amp dial on it and have to turn it way down when trying the K&B's. |
RE: Glow plug problems

i did do a break in on few of the plugs, heat up for 10 seconds, cooll down n repete it few times ....useing a dynamite igniter, it does light them bright n i charge igniter once a week, i have the c battery igniter but i get 6-7 lights, duracell/energizer n radio shack alk. n battery junk after that point,i might have to look into a power panel setup, not sure am looking to hump more weight ,gotta do sumptin..... will get a few mc 9 plugs tomorrow n burn up half a gallon fuel.do they make a small amp adjustable igniter ?

RE: Glow plug problems
littlepiston, when you use the mcoy glow plugs, do you use the copper ring??
when i do, the engines vibration keeps on loosening the plug, i took out the ring and problem solved....i even put it back on for good measure and it came loose...... |
RE: Glow plug problems
I only use McCoy plugs and always use the ring. It never breaks loose. Long life span as well.

RE: Glow plug problems
well i have been running this one it has a os 40 four stroke
|
RE: Glow plug problems
dirty!!! i need to clean it :)
|
RE: Glow plug problems
when you screw it down make sure you crush the washer when new there cone shape
|
RE: Glow plug problems
does the ring really matter??? the one that it came with didnt have a ring and it lasted a while...
|
RE: Glow plug problems
its a seal it will leak compression and also a spacer , your plug might be to far in your cumbustion chamber and it could reduce power :D
|
RE: Glow plug problems
looks like you have as many projects going as i do, very nice ride you got there ..........the os 12/15 is getting tired , loses compression when it warms up, it's seen alot of run time

RE: Glow plug problems
that'd have to be a pretty long plug or a very small chamber on the head inorder for the piston to hit the plug [:-]
I guess im just another one of the few people who has had problems with McCoy plugs. All i use now are O'donnell plugs and havent had a problem yet. |
RE: Glow plug problems
There has been a bad batch of McCoy's lately on the market. Watch where the coil is welded at on the tip of the plug as some of the spot welds and/or wire is sticking out by the threads. There have also been issues with insulators leaking or blowing out.
