issues getting motor started?
Ok i went to the pond to run my tunnel hull it has a thundertiger 3.5 outboard on it and i ended up popping 2glow plugs but it still didnt manage to start after i put in my 3rd plug i ended up killing my battery off completely which it lost alot of its charge due to cold weahter jand just sitting there alot but it was like 30 degrees F. with a 5mph wind coming across the pond and i tired everything to get the boat to run leaned it out richened it out and still managed to pop 2glow plugs!!![:@] so can anyone think of whats going on here.......

RE: issues getting motor started?
It's just too cold to start and run a boat eather!!
|
RE: issues getting motor started?
i would try and heat the motor up with a hairdryer, or a heat gun...
if you cant bring one with you, heat it yp at home, start it there just to heat it up, but not too long as it needs cooling to keep from overheating, then by the time you get to the lake, there might be some heat retained in it and it has a higher chance of starting than if it was cold.... and yes, its too cold to start,,, |
RE: issues getting motor started?
ok i was thinkin it was to cold but i was trying my hardest to get it to start i havent like acctully ran it at a lake in a while and i finaly got it back together i bought the bronze alloy prop from prather and a new servo and its been 1month since i started trying to get it ready but i had to wait and wait for parts and then all of this global warming crap seemed to have stop and now its colder than witches titties in a brass braw on a snow day now outside but i figured id at least try it for the heck of it but thanks for the help and as soon as it warms up ill be heading back to the park

RE: issues getting motor started?
Not discounting that cold can cause problems starting a boat...but it was in the 30s when I ran the other day and the boat ran fine...
I think you might have some problems with it warm too, if you can't even get it to pop over with it cold... Sean |
RE: issues getting motor started?
You're going to have to richen the carb a lot to try to get it to fire up in cold weather. A tiny squirt of lighter fluid down the carb will help also.
|
RE: issues getting motor started?
i started it up like 2 weeks ago just a dry start for a few seconds and it started fine then i took it out there to the pond and it didnt do a thing except let me pop some glow plugs which im affraid to try to start it again because of the threat of popping another one (im down to my last one) i think im going to pull the carb off tonight and give it a good cleaning with like WD-40 or something or some fuel to see if that may help it out because it has sat on my shelf for like 2 years or so but like i said it did run idk ill give it a try 2morrow here at the house before i head back to the pond again!

RE: issues getting motor started?
The lighter fluid must light at a lower temp than nitro or methanol. I wouldn't do it too much but I know of a few people that have done it. I personally haven't tried it yet.
|
RE: issues getting motor started?
i think i may end up trying that tomorrow with the lighter fluid idk yet....
|
RE: issues getting motor started?
Put it this way, when Andy Brown tried to run an engine with 90% nitro (!), the only way that he could get it to fire up was with a squirt of the lighter fluid.

RE: issues getting motor started?
Your fuel hasent been sitting on concret has it, and your glow igniter is working properly (my fuel sat on concrete for some time and(went bad) my glow igniter was working but only if held in a certain postion) just some ideas.

RE: issues getting motor started?
might be bad fuel causing not to start...i hardly believe the cold temp. is the culprit coz i ran nitro boat/car on freezing temp and snow.
if battery drained without even able to start the engine and causing burn plug,,i'l try to open the engine and check inside, it might have lose metals.... ur still lucky coz u have a pond to run on,,ours are frozen:D |
RE: issues getting motor started?
it may be bad fuel because its like 2years old i think but its sat on a shelf and i ran it thought the motor last time with no problem but it still may be bad fuel though and the bad thing is the only rc shop here is going to be closed for like the nxt 2months sooo idk what im gonna do with the fuel problem the closests shop is like 30mins away and its completely out of the way to get to!!! but ill probly have to make another trip to the shop if i dont get my motor started on this fuel and run it the rest out!!!

RE: issues getting motor started?
Geeze.... I'd be afraid of hitting an iceberg in that weather. Talk about a die-hard.
|
RE: issues getting motor started?
get a quart at towerhobbies.com its not that spendy, and it will get you by for the time being
|
RE: issues getting motor started?
ok i may do that if the motor dont start come 2morrow afternoon but hopefully it will start ill pick up a thing of lighterfluid and drop a few drops in the carb and let it go see if it will start rightup hopefully it will but if all elses fells least i gave it a try in this cold freakin weather! but hopefully it will come to life tomorrow and ill be able to put it in the pond sometime this week and enjoy the boat for once i had it painted a year ago and never had the urge to get it running again until i ran across a Nitro boat video on you tube and was like wow i gotta get back into this again so since then its been history!!!

RE: issues getting motor started?
you think 30 is bad... the temp on the US Bank sign is at -16 w/o windchill up here right now...
Kinda hard to run your boat with 30+ inches of ice on the water :( |
RE: issues getting motor started?
yea that would suck. but im dieing to get this thing running in are local park pond hopefully i wont get ran off, but if i do theres a couple other ponds around here. im glad though that the pond isnt frozen here but a week ago it was like all nice and warm then all this cold weather came. Well i appreciate everything though i will keep you all informed on what i discover that is giving me my motor problems!!!

RE: issues getting motor started?
My Miss Vegas was supposed to come today, but didnt. I wanted to fool with getting it set up tonight...tomorrow is supposed to be 72 degrees!!! Anyhow, I spent the night getting my rigger ready to run instead. I will have to buy some fuel tomorrow, since I have very little left and my order (which includes a gallon) did not come in today (supposed to come in tomorrow now, but if it aint here when I get home from work, I don't want to wait around for it...)
As to your hobby shop being closed for a couple weeks...we have one in town, and it will close permanently at the end of March. The next nearest one I know of, is 2 hours away...so from where I am, 30 minutes is not bad at all... Sean |
RE: issues getting motor started?
well the guy that runs the hobby shop is a real **** **** i go to ask a question about something and he just got all hissy pissy about everything!! but 30mins running 80mph down the interstate burns up gas that i cant afford to burn but ill end up ordering it online like everything else least i dont have to put up with grumpy hobby shop owners!

Edited the rest out...did not make sense without the quote that was removed..

RE: issues getting motor started?
-2 here right now and -16 with the wind chill factor thrown in. The river froze over today as yesterday it only had ice floes. Just a little chilly to go outside and play with the boats. I did spend a few hours in the dungeon rebuilding one of mine and packing for an upcoming swap meet.

RE: issues getting motor started?
I dont know how you can stand these long winters having as many nice boats as you do Ron!
|
RE: issues getting motor started?
yea boating season again for me 70 outside woo hoo! Have you tried to spray just a little bit of WD-40 into your engine.
