I have zero experience with porting an engine, but my understanding of regular auto engines is that polishing on the intake side is bad in most situations. It allows the fuel to stick to the surfaces, instead of flowing past them. But I have seen pictures of polished crank shafts (ports) for nitro engines...so what do I know...;)

you are correct, polishing on the intake is bad for the mentioned reason...you want it like a raw casting type of finish, nitro engines are kinda smooth inside to bgin with just from the machining, I believe(may be wrong) that the poished crank and rod is due to that its a rotating part and it helps reduce friction from the fuel on it...were the polishing comes in on real engines is in the combustion chamber and exhaust ports, it keeps the carbon from sticking to it so easily...

You can moddify nitro engines for substancial increases. twisted liquid racing specializes in small nitro moddiifications and also has aftermarket parts for that boat.

Automotive engines run a rough finish in the intake ports when running gasoline but race engines on alky all the ports and combustion chambers are smooth as glass thats because the alky stays atomized much better than gasoline. Some nitro engines will benifit more than others with a port job, CMB, MAC, OPS engines are very good right out of the box cause they spend more time machining and blending the ports also you will notice that the high perf engines will have large tranfer ports in the casting between the motor mount holes. So a cheaper engine will always have issues with port size and geometry but porting will have a larger impact on it's performance. Remember to practice on a junk engine before you put the dremel tool to your good one.

This is what I did to the Mach .15 in my BJ before I swapped it out. It had better response and a bit higher top end though it wasnt insane. It also became easier to start.
