RE: AMPS hulls & outboards pics
Very rare T4 with a Fox .40 as a power head. Doubt this motor has ever been fired up.

The others are collector items and will kept as such. Nice thread! |

Only difference to what to the tilt is that the level is vertical instead of horizontal. But yea, thats is the unit on the AMPS tunnel also. You can see the unit in the pic with the driver / cowl laying on the boat.

Hey Guys,
That is super cool!!..... I didn't know they made anything like that. Do they still make them? How do they perform?? Do you have any video of yours running??? Thanks, Phil |

RE: AMPS hulls & outboards pics& tips
Ducted fan engines have the carb on the rear of the case and are timed by a disc or drum just like all performance marine engines so I don't know how you would use one for an amps setup......
|
RE: AMPS hulls & outboards pics& tips
The ducted fan engines are differant but I think he might find the piston , sleeve and rod he is looking for inside of one. I think the o.s powerheads were just regular rear exhaust marine engine cases with airplane engine front bearing housings and a special airplane type crankshaft with a longer crank pin to drive the pto.
Now, if anyone that reads this knows more exactly what parts fit these OS made amps powerhead please correct me and post the information . I am only guessing on this based on the few engines of mine I have had apart over the years. I am really not sure. I am only trying to help by suggesting where I would look if I were trying to find parts myself. |
RE: AMPS hulls & outboards pics& tips
If I was going to try to run one of these amps outboards today I would use one with a K&B powerhead because they just have standard K&B outboard powerheads with a AMPS hex drive PTO.
The last one of mine I was running was a Bud Light Seebold tunnel that had a .67 K&B powerhead. Sure, the o.s. powerheads run smoother but when you break parts you have these problem of trying to figure out what the heck parts are in there and then finding them . If you run an amps be sure you don't break a gear in the lower unit, you will really have problems finding that. These are great old ouboard motors with a scale look that just can't be beat in appearance but they are a little bit heavy. Really , today, they are best just to keep on the shelf and look at. These motors will break gears quite easily if you strike something with the prop and there are no spares to be had, it is not real easy to replace them either. The only way it would be practical to run these again is if someone started making replacement gears . |
