ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">Hey guys, I&rsquo;ve been reading through this forum for a while now. What a great place! The more I read it the more I get excited about a new build. I have a brand new ASP 15MX marine engine with a pull start, it&rsquo;s been sitting there collecting dust for a few years. I now want to make a good use of it. What I havein mind is&hellip;.well&hellip;like everyone else&hellip;..a &ldquo;wild thing&rdquo;&hellip;</div><div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">What I have in mind is a 26&rdquo; constructed with 1/8 ply for transom, bulkheads, stringers etc, and 3mm balsa for bottom and deck. As for the running gear, this is where your help is appreciated. I&rsquo;m thinking a 4mm flex cable but not sure about the prop yet. 100mm rudder with water pickup, trim tabs and fins. I hope I&rsquo;m not too off the mark. Does anyone have any experience with the ASP engine? What kind of speed would I be able to get with a setup like this? Thanks guys and keep up with the good work!</div><div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"></div>

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

oh.....and does anyone know if there is a tuned pipe that will fit this engine?

This is the only distributor for ASP engines I could find.

A tuned pipe would be easy to find, its the header for your specific engine that will be difficult to find.

Ive built a wild thing with a ASP .21mx. Almost finished building the hull. Check out my long time building thread here : [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2409552/tm.htm]My Wild Thing[/link]

Not sure of how it will go as yet.

got any questions just let us know....

Aren't those the ones that came in the old MRP boats? Headers and pipes are easy to find. One from a Traxxas truck is what I've used and a Mac 1011 pipe. Mac also makes a header but the Traxxas is what's in my Wild Thing .12. Any tuned pipe from a .12-.18 ejngine will do the job.

Thanks Ross and Ron. I know the build may be slow as Xmas is just arond the corner. Ross, I've been reading through your thread, a great job you've done. Ron, your boat looks wonderful! That's what I want as well. I'll see what mine turns out to be.... The hardest thing is getting the right stuff for the boat. I'm about to order the ply. what's the difference between Lite ply and the normal ply? I've heard people saying not to use balsa, use 3mm ply instead. Is it true? Ron, thanks for the header tip. I'll see if i can find one. How fast does your boat go?

Thanks mmarionz. This is a wonderful place. Ron, thanks for the advice again. Would you by any chance have a part number or remember which Traxxas engine the header was for? I'm a bit stuck!. Thanks.

mx.2191,

Whats your first name? Where in NZ you from.? N or S island.

Ive got a header for my old ASP21 that is similar to your .15 ASP. See Photo.

It has the side exhaust and I found a header for it.
I had to make some mods to it so it would fit, will dig it out and get a photo of it for you.

In regard to Ron advice on the traxxas header look here for a start. Will do more searches for you.

Here's the side exhaust header that I've used: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXJM08&P=RF . Note that the flange has to be opened up to match the gasket. I just used a stack of about 3 or 4 Dremel cut-off wheels, the cheap ones, to open it up as you want to angle it towards the header's pipe. Use the gasket as a template and use a Sharpie or something to mark what needs to go.
Here's one video that Mark "ob nut" Scott shot of my son driving it a few years back: http://www.rcflix.com/photopost/data/500/612fr20.mpg
If you need any more help with the build, I'm subscribed to this thread.
Just so you know, I didn't build the hull, Mike "Grim Racer" Zaborowski did back when he had his own company. He also had some laid up in epoxy-glas.
You can do the 2 bulkheads in thick balsa if you want to but the transom has to be lite ply. Use model aircraft grade ply, not anything from a home improvement store.

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

Thanks Ross and Ron for the information on the header. I found one as well. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=110411785982
I'm not sure about the clearence at the bottom from the hull. Hopefully this will fit coz i just bought it. I'm not going to cr\y if it doesn't as it's quite cheap! Ron, the boat is running very smoothly in that video. I just hope mine will also run like that. I'm not hoping for a high speed as long as it doesn't run like a shopping basket i'd be happy! :) And thanks to both of you in advance for your help and no doubt i'll be asking heaps of questions in the future with the build.

Ross, my name is Justin in North Island.

oh, i'll have a look at the header once it shows up to see if i need to modify it. i think i will have to.....

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

A blocked header like that one can make you lose up to near 1,600 RPM, that's why I open them up.

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

Thanks Ron......i see...... it looks like i've got some work to do when i get that header. the reason i bought it is becuase it's cheap! like 10 dollars brand new. For a boat this size what hardware would you recommend? I've looked through a ton of websites trying to find a rudder, struct assembly. Unclerash bult a nice WT as well, i quite like his hardware but not sure if i can afford it [:o]</p>

I went kind of on the cheap side, all you need is something simple. I just used some hardware from Octura.

Hi Ron, how long is your rudder? I found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/rudder-strut-4mm...e578ef100#shId
will this be suitable for the 26'' WT? Thanks

Ron Olson 12-10-2009 09:19 AM

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

Mine is 3" long which to me appears to be on the short side.

Justin,

Here is a scan of the plans for the 'Wild Thing', showing the length of the rudder from the drive line centre to the bottom of the rudder.

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

Hey, thanks heaps guys! I think I will buy that rudder set. it's quite cheap I think. stuff here are well over the $120 mark. the one i was looking at is about  3 3/4". That plan is very very useful Ross. I did wonder where the most appropriate places to mount the rudder and strut were. </p>

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

I have just bought that rudder, strut, flex cable and the works! can't wait! :Dwell, i just hope the 4mm flex cable is not too small for the .15.....

Ron Olson 12-10-2009 11:26 PM

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

No, that size is fine.

Hey Ron,

Could you elaborate a little. I am looking to gain just a little more oomph from my engine so I can run the Y536 (on 1/12 Miss Elam). It seems like I just need alittle more. Are you talking about porting? Thanks.

Ron Olson 12-11-2009 12:50 AM

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

What it's called is port matching. It can be used on any 2- or-4-stroke engine for more efficiency. What that header flange is doing is choking the flow of the exhaust, the same thing as using too small of a carb on the intake.
I've seen other marine engines especially on RTR's that need it badly. If someone could give you free HP and RPM, this is an easy way to do it with just a few minutes worth of work.

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

very well explained Ron. Actually that's what I thought you meant as well. The header has't arrived yet. I will take a photo or two when I get it. hopefully sometime early next week. The wood has arrived and it is great quality. I hope I'll be able to start cutting the transom and stringers tomorrow if i get some free time! To be honest I haven't worked with plys this thin. what's the best tool for that? I dont have a band saw but do own a jagsaw and some hand tools. :D</p>

Ron Olson 12-11-2009 09:10 AM

RE: ASP 15MX Mono NEW BUILD

Use what you've got. I don't see why you couldn't use a jigsaw. You might want to cut the pieces slightly oversize then sand it down.
