RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
I saw that but like it wouldn't be big enough for the plane. Maybe we need a US 1200 that could take a 20 cc to 30 cc engine. :-) I'm happy with the 60 and am thinking about the 1000. One of the guys in the club has an OS 120 he wants to get rid of.

How many pounds thrust and what weight maximum do you feel would be minimum for a gas or gas-glow engine on a 1000? What diameter prop will a 1000 handle?

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
What a forum site. Just recently became a member of RC Universe. Glad to see that there are other fans of the Ultra Sport besides me. I am the only one at our club that flies them, and I am not sure why. I love the plane, I have three built (2 US60 and 1 US 1000), I probably have over 400 flights on one of them. I had a 1000 kit for sometime that I finally built over last winter, installed a OS 120 ax in it using a 15 X 10 prop. All of mine are trike set up mainly because of the winds we get here in Wyoming. The US 60's both have OS61SF installed, all three cook right along. I will try to post photos.

If you are running the stock muffler, take the baffle out. I ran a gallon of 5% Omega through mine before switching to 15% and it has run very nicely right from the beginning.

It will run cooler and have more power at the top of the power curve. But more importantly, the engine will run smoother through the midrange. I'm not sure why you would be concerned about torque in an Ultra Sport, but any loss of low speed grunt will be more than compensated by the ability to lean out the low speed needle and still get a good transition through the midrange.

At $450 retail I would like to look at something I can afford. The CRRC or SPE are more in line with my budget. But I believe they are a bit larger than the Evolution.

I bring my US 40 with an OS 46FX (stock muffler... ugh) and I love to Bring it up at one end of the field and dive towards the threshold of the runway and squeeze her down to about 4 feet as she passes in front of me..... OH... that baby ROCKS!!!!!! She is FAST..... I want faster..... once the tank is almost dry.... I don't remember bringing the stick back below "almost broke off the top!!!!" so she was burning the fuel.... Drop the retracts and touch down...... She is pretty as she is screaming by.... I'm all shaking from the adrenaline!!!!! It's great... and then I put my 1/4 scale Piper Cub up for a little "slow mo" fun....

Regarding the 160, leave the baffle in the muffler and add some castor to your fuel. You should run the engine on a test stand to see how well it runs before it's mounted in your airframe, then you can see the fuel lines and make easy adjustments. You only need regular size tubing and no pumps if the tank is mounted against the fire wall.

I took my US40 out for the maiden flights today. it was an eBay purchase that someone had crashed. It wasn't that bad but I fully stripped it and refit the engine and nose. I bought an OS .46AX for it and the plane SCREAMS. Even running sloppy rich (the engine had less than a tank through it) it was a real screamer.
[link=http://image2-6.rcuniverse.com/e1/gallery/photos/224914/lg-159404.jpg][/link]
I got the color scheme from a pattern ship I saw once in a magazine. I really like the pink/purple with yellow highlights.

I found I really didn't like the retracts in my US60. My field is too rough so the struts were always misaligning and I also found that the strip ailerons made lousy flaperons so I built a second wing with fixed gear, putting in extended struts so I can use larger props to slow down easier and I decided to put in Fowler flaps with fully hidden linkage. They have worked out well. Here is a construction picture and a close up detail from the bottom image above. They work great! My next project is to build the second fuselage to put the OS .91FX into it to get a bit more speed (hence the longer struts)

FAN-FREAK'N-TASTIC! I like the color scheme!! Had to send my OS 1.60 in to O.S......rear bearing seized. uhg. Castor oil on it's way to say the least!

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
I had the vent and fill lines reversed on the .46ax. made it a little hard to initially start
I am planning an OS BGX for the US1000 I have in the queue. Probably a smoke system also. I love the smell of Castor. I run 50% castor fuels so I get the best of both worlds.
The color scheme has great top/bottom contrast so it makes staying oriented easier

The BGX (2.1 cu in) is way more engine than the US 1000 can carry. Size and weight will be a serious issue and you will have to move the gear to the fuselage to get prop clearance. The 1.60 will pull it over 100 mph and give truely unlimited (out-of-sight) vertical. Because of the extra weight of the engine and balancing tail weight, and the weight and drag of the giant scale landing gear you will have to use, the performance may actually be worse with the 2.10.

Jim, OS thinks my rear bearing failure was causing overheating and thus a contributing culprit to my knocking noise. We shall see... It's going to be broken in on my bench and retested on the plane.

That is unusual for a new OS, but it sounds like that could have been causing all of your problems. I'm sure you will like it much better with the new bearing. Be sure and run the fuel out of the engine when you are done flying for the day and use after-run oil. OS bearings do have a tendency to rust.

Maybe it's my eyes but can you better explain the flaps you set up? Is this the sheeting area that is on the trailing edge that is hinged and deployed as a flap?

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, I'm mistakenly calling them Fowler flaps. They do not actually move rearward as Fowler Flaps normally would. These are simply large, barn door flaps embedded in the underside of the wing leaving the entire stock strip aileron in place. if you look at the uncovered (left) picture, the purple is the covering from the inside wrapped around the edges before covering. The flaps use a monokote hinge on the front edge. They deploy about 45 degrees and make a HUGE difference on the landing speed and how quickly the plane slows/descends.

The BGX has been used by others in the forum. Certainly weight and balance will need attention but it can and has been done. I've been flying overpowered planes for 30+ years. The smoke system will add to the weight also

So, the barn door flaps are an extra piece of balsa that is hinged by the top covering of Monocoat? Just lay a 3/32 covered piece of Balsa down and drive it with a Servo embedded in the wing?

More or less. There is some additional structure to make the hinge line support and the flap itself is 1/16" plywood. I found with the original retract wing, programming flaperons or spoilerons into the ailerons did little to slow things down. and there are little access doors in the wing to get to the 4 embedded servos.

Interesting, they're selling the .60 size and the .40 size for the same price $99.99. With this ..016AB.. you get $10 bucks off (if you spend another buck to bring your total over $100) Thats $89.99 for a new US .60 kit for Christmas, not a bad deal!

It's $89.99 shipped at Omni w/o having to buy anything else...use the coupon code on the homepage. It's a steal of a deal if you ask me! I build a US40 last year and am planning on the US60 this year with a Saito 115
