Default A few questions about smokers.

I am thinking about putting a smoker on my plane and was wondering if you have to have a certain size motor before you can. I have a extra 300 with a webra .50 on it. Also what size tank do you usually use on a 40 size plane? I have seen stuff about smoker mufflers what are these ? I have a pitts muffler on it will that work?any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do a search for minnflyers article called Got Smoke. It will answer all your questions.

Most 40 size planes don't take to smoke real well. Not that you can't get a 40 size motor to smoke. Just that adding a pound of weight to a 5 pound plane really hurts how it flys. Plus there is not a lot of extra room in most 40 sizers. As far as how much it burns. From what I have seen in the past it burns about twice as fast as the glow. The last one I did was on a Goldberg SU-31. It had a 16oz tank to feed the Webra 1.20 and a 16oz for smoke. The plane would fly 10-12 minutes. The smoke would last 5.
A smoke muffler is different from a regular muffler in two ways. One, it has a coil inside the oil runs through to pre heat it. Two, there is a spray bar close to the engine to inject the oil into. I have never used one. Both of these things can be done with a little work in your shop.

Yup as he said.

You need a larger motor that produces a lot of heat for best smoke.

With the smaller motors as soon as you start injecting smoke oil, the mufflers cools off, decreasing the amount of smoke GREATLY in short order.

Miniflyer has tried fiberglass and tape wraps which help, but even this is not sufficient IMHO to keep the smoke density high.

Larger 4 strokers and gas engines produce more heat, so muffler cooling is not as big of a problem.

Then there is ALL OF THAT WEIGHT!

Second battery pack, tubing, fittings, pump, smoke muffler & wrap, charge receptacle, second ( preferably as large as possible ) smoke fluid tank...

On any smaller plane, I'd suggest installing your smoke system in a way that ultimately makes it removeable, as you'll likely want to pull it out after a while, for better performance.

I have a question about smokers; why do they think it's acceptable to throw their butts out the car window?

Ok is this a trick question?

My answer: because they can't fit their A#$ses within their car seats? ( No offense intended to smokers... ).

PS, the reason I throw my butts out the window is because my wife would complain that the car stinks if I put them in the ash tray.

One of these days I'm just gonna throw HER butt out the window! [>:]

Ok, I'll stay out of your car--if you agree not to throw your spent sticks anywhere I might drive and/or walk.
