What to do with a .25FX
 

Ok, it's MY turn to ask...

I have an OS .25FX in a Sig Wonder which is on the edge of being too much power for it. I've got an OS .10 that I'm thinking of putting in it to mellow it out a bit, but the big question is: What do I do with the .25?

What do you guys suggest? It can be a kit or ARF, Aerobatic or docile, just as long as it's fun to fly - or different and unusual

Put it on a Lanier Shrike 15, or sell it to me. I have a Wonder with a 15LA that is underpowered. Got my clock cleaned yesterday by a guy with a Shrike with an OS 15CVA. The Wonder is a nice plane, but with a 15 it is grossly underpowered and with a 10, I am afraid it would probably have a hard time going out of a hand launch. The Egyptians over here fly them with OS 32s. Have not tried that yet.

Well now, that is a dilemma. I know what you mean. I was planning on building a Sig Wonder and I bought an OS 25 FX for it, but on recommendations from you (and others) here on RCU I have scrapped the plans for building that. So I am in the same boat that you are in. But I think I have a solution that will take care of both of us. You can send me your motor!!! :D:D

Last months Model Aviation has plans in it for a Lockeed P2V Neptune. This is the plane that my dad served on when he was in the Navy, so I'm thinking of building one. It's designed to be flown with 2 .25 motors, so I need another one!!!!! So I should be watching the mail for it to come, right!!!! :):)

Actually, I will be watching the advice you get on this because I am in the same boat. I need a project for this motor too.

I toyed with the idea of a Twin, but that's more hassle than I want.

LMK if you really have a desire to build that thing though, I have 2 .25LA's I could loan you.

Try Paul Swanson's Fat Free Taco. It's a great little plane for the .25FX or a Mag .28.

You could build a 2548 scale combat plane. I have blue foam fuselage and wing cores for a P-47. I'm not sure if I'll combat the plane or just fly it; if I ever get it built.

I had my .25FX on a Phoenix Sonic 25. A very nice aerobatic flyer even with the (dare I say) "recommended size engine" and standard sized equipment. I had a lot of fun doing very close in aerobatics ala parkflyer style at about 1/2 to 2/3 throttle. I felt it was well worth the $75.00 price tag.

Mike, that was the first engine I ever bought, put it on a Seniorita and learned to fly. I just recently retired that old Seniorita and built a new one, took all the dihedral out of the wing, set it up as a taildragger, added barndoor ailerons and bomb drops in the wing, built a set of floats which has been a real hoot, enlarged the rudder about 1/2" inch and it flies great. It came out 8 oz. over the original but still a 25fx is plenty. Turn up the rudder for max throw and it does a really nice knife edge. Axial rolls, extremely low stall speed, what more could a guy want?

Ken and Mike, here's a few ideas.

Modeltech Extra 300s. I started flying one last summer. It's had hundreds of flights with either an old OS 25F ABC or a Webra .32. Did well with both, but obviously the Webra has much more pull. This plane flies great.

Another ARF that's not so pretty to look at, but flies great is one of the World Models Air Combat series. This is another I put together last summer. It's had more flights than the Extra. It flies absolutely great. This is the plane I refer to as my beater plane, it's the one that I get out when I haven't been flying for a while. I've had 3 engines in it. It started with an old Saito .45. The engine worked well, and the sound was great, but it was too heavy, so I swapped it out. The next engine was an old OS .25 FSR. This worked well. Eventually I replaced this with an old OS .32 FSR I got off eBay.

I know its not a true sport flier but I have a GP Combat Corsair ARF with a FX25 on it. This little plane is actually a great sport flier. It flys great slow, does beautiful rolls and loops. Crank it up and it will do 60-70mph and unlimited verticals! This plane is just plain fun.

I just designed and built this, and it is really fun. Very gentle at low throttle, very fast and maneuverable at high throttle. I designed it to be easy to build. I am happy to share the plans.

Did you guys ever think of a quickie 500? I have heard they are great sport planes with 25's. I have one in the building stage i am going to put a ST G-34 on. It is a discontinued Direct connection Doddger. The only thing about these is you don't have much room in the fuse.

The plans are a little rough, and the as-builts would look a little different, but if you're a builder, they should be alright.

I will spend a little time making sure they are complete enough to build, and then post a pdf. Sorry, I don't have a .dwg because I use my Mac to do plans.

snitch - that looks great. with all the suggestions here, i think the snitch snatches it!

if you want something just to throw around and have a good time, WM air combat planes are fun. i've flown a bunch of them in Hong Kong and they are seriously easy to fly. good sunday fun.

if you want something super fun scale (or rather fun and vaguely scale) you can consider the AK Models Geebee 25. i have one and find that its cute... i'm putting in a 32sx with a pitts muffler in it once i get around to it.

personally, seeing as you are a pro, i'd do the snitch!

i second the global ME-109 they look like great planes and if there anything like the .40 size,it should fly like its on rails :D or a small cub for lazy day flying:)

I've got an FX .25 in the plane in my right hand.

It pulls it along quite nicely, with a 9 x 5 prop on 15% fuel. I left the baffle in the muffler, as it is plenty-powerful as is, and I don't like to make unnecessary noise.

I've had some fuel delivery issues with this plane, due to long lay-up periods between flights (fuel lines rot in tank), but the FX is a good little engine, once it is getting fuel. "If you feed it, it will run".

Even with retracts, and working bomb drops, it hauls out pretty good (read very steep climbs, and 80 mph + top speed). Its nicest manuever is the slow roll, though it looks pretty cool just flying around smoothly with the bombs hanging under each wing.

Last week was my first chance to fly it with the bombs, and I was pleasantly surprized to find that I felt no difference in handling before and after dropping them. I'll have to make myself some drop tanks, as well. I also found it fairly easy to aim the bombs, which will come in handy, if I use a bomb drop as a scale maneuver in a contest, and want to place the bombs on the ground dead ahead of myself.

The other two fighters would also work well with an FX .25. I put in parts for both versions with the kits, although most guys build them electric, these days.

The Chipmunk would have to be converted to glow (read cut a firewall, reinforce the sheeting between the front of the wing and the firewall), but would be REDICULOUS with an FX .25. As an electric, it has a 70 MPH top speed and unlimited vertical.

I have no experience with this plane but it is neat looking. According to the web page the kit is all laser cut and at $65.oo it is alos priced right.
