GP Old Timer 40?
I picked up a Great Planes "Old Timer 40". It is a discontinued model but was NIB. I suspect that it was discontinued because it was a poor seller. It doesn't exactly exude speed or sex appeal but I kinda like the looks of it. Anyone got any experience with this little known model?

RE: GP Old Timer 40?
I've not flown one but I was looking very strongly at getting one once. I was under the impression that they were great slow fliers but I would have definitely wanted ailerons on one . I bet it would fly great with a 46LA engine.

I also thought it looked cool but the lack of ailerons turned me off

RE: GP Old Timer 40?
Yeah, I'll probably add 'em.

RE: GP Old Timer 40?
If you add ailerons, it will fly about like a cub or a Pete-n-poke. real docile slow and dependable. I had a .70 Surpass with an APC 12X8 on mine and it would be airborne in 25 feet max at 1/2 throttle. And my 12 year old still beat it in a race against his bicycle. it was probably too much engine and not enough prop, but that's all I had the ground clearance for.

I found a picture of this model on Google/images.
I'll try to attach it to this post. Does anyone notice the resemblance to a modern Sig Rascal? It resembles a Rascal that has been blended with a Reliant, if I have the right airplane name associated with the image that is in my mind. I love this type of plane. Those that have never flown a good three channel model before should give this type of model a chance. Maybe make two wings for it when building it. One for ailerons and one without. Ed |
RE: GP Old Timer 40?
Ed,
If you're thinking of the big gull-winged Stinson, then Reliant is correct. The Old Timer's wing does remind me of the Reilant but the fuselage has more of a Taylorcraft look to it. And there is a resemblance to the Rascal as well. I learned to fly RC with a 3-channel Falcon 56 and you're right - it is a simpler way to fly. But I'm probably gonna need ailerons on my Old Timer since I intend to put her on floats. |
