Ducks on the Pond ....

I read the comparison in this announcement and agree that the new classified system does offer far more than the old one when it comes to features. But, those features are not what I dislike. I don't like the layout of the new classifieds. I much more preferred the old style as they were easier to browse for me. I also do not like one feature of the new system in which someone can list multiple categories for their item. This has resulted in large engines being listed in both the Airplanes and Engines section. For me, on a dog slow dial-up connection, this is a waste of time and only slows down my trip through the classifieds while I look for the next little widget I simply cannot live without.

just my .02,
John

RE: Ducks on the Pond ....

JWN,

Engines should not appear in airplanes section. Only airplanes should. This is a moderator issue where our moderators need to clean up categories. This is the same stuff we deal with on the old forums. Moderators would constantly have to move stuff into the proper categories or eliminate double posts.

Double categorization IS appropriate at times though. Take a Giant Scale Piper Cub. It could go in Giant Scale and it could also go in Scale. Most of the time a single category is the only one appropriate but there are cases where more than one is proper. If things are not where they should be that is the users fault and not ours. We can only clean it up after the fact.

Would you prefer a listing option WITHOUT thumbnails for your slower connection? I'm sure we could do that.

Marc,
Don't get me wrong, I understand the benefit of double categorization to the seller, but as a buyer, it doesn't help me personally.

Listings without thumbs would definitely benefit.

Another option that would benefit browsing the ads would be to keep the listings for the different categories posted on the left hand side of the page at all times. Right now, if you go into Airplanes, you can no longer go into Engines without first going back to the main Marketplace page. This again makes the browsing experience take longer as you must do this for each of the sections. I browse Engines, Airplanes, Plans, and Radios. To do this, I have to hit the main Marketplace page a total of four times instead of just once. Believe me, if I could get a faster connection, this wouldn't be so much of an annoyance, but I'm stuck with a blindingly slow 24K connection due to my choice of living in the sticks :)

Thank you,
John

JWN,

Underneath the left box is a drop down menu.

It says "Jump to Main Category"

Select that and you can jump directly to engines, cars, radios, etc...

It's amazing the number of features there are on this site if you just sit down and look for them :)

Thanks,
John

RE: Ducks on the Pond ....

John,

It does take awhile to find them all...easter eggs everywhere...

Just added....modem guys can also list stuff without thumbnails. You can now go into your preferences and set a large number of listings per page and then set your default to not see thumbnails. then your browse view isn't far from what the old RCU discussion view looks like. It isn't what I prefer to see. I love the new format and thumbnails especially but I am on 3MB broadband. Because we are trying to meet the needs of modem users or those who like a different listing view this option is available.

Does this do the trick for you?

RE: Ducks on the Pond ....

Marc,
Yes it does. Killing the thumbnails dropped my page load time to about 1/2 what it was with the thumbs enabled. The main catagory drop down is also a great feature.

Thank you!
John
