Password Hints

I keep getting a pop-up asking me to create a password "hint" to help me remember my password should I forget. Nice idea except the four possible hint catagories are not relevant to my password. Why not offer a blank line for me to fill in with a phrase or other keyword that will jog my memory? I don't wish to use my mother's maiden name, last four digits of my SSN, well, you get the picture.
Regards,
Ed

this should not be the case. your password is already set. this is just a hint you set so if you forget your password the question will be asked to verify you are who you say you are. every credit card company or secure system typically uses this. Not sure why you are getting the popup asking you for a password or hint after it is set. that is not possible.

RE: Password Hints

You don't know what my mother's maiden name is nor is it anywhere on this site for you to verify if I'm who I say I am. If you simply let me craft my own "hint" I'll be able to retreive it without the moderator's help. My password does not lend itself to any of the four hints you limit me to. Those passwords I gave up years ago. Am I not being clear here about what the problem is?

On second thought, never mind.

Ed

You're being pretty clear but I'm not sure how difficult it would be to setup a user entered hint, I'll send this to the right person to find out. However, understand that your password hint doesn't have to be related to the password itself. It's just a security measure to ensure the proper person is receiving the password so the hint itself irrelevant really... it could be your favorite color, food, car, etc. It doesn't have to relate to your password, it just needs to be something you would remember when triggered by a question.

RE: Password Hints

You are misunderstanding how this works.

The password hint isn't a hint to remind you of what your password is. It is a "code word" to verify to us who you are so we know it is ok to send you your password. The two are unrelated.

For example your password could be the phrase "red letter" and your hint question could be your mother's maiden name. If you lost your password you would come to the site and click "forgot password" link. There we ask you for your username and then prompt you for your mothers maiden name. If you get the answer correct we know you are who you say you are and give you your password.
