How do get rid of this format ?
This "new" format is a ROYAL PAIN.
How do I get rid of it this and get the old format back ? With this new format you are REQUIRED to go through AT LEAST 2 additional screens to get to what you want. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. |
RE: How do get rid of this format ?
Please be more specific as to what area of the site you are talking about.

RE: How do get rid of this format ?
The RC Universe site.
Before you changed the format, I would go to the site, I would be automatically logged on, and with ONE click could be at Buy/Sell or the Forums. Now I have to go through the tabbed menu on the left for Buy/Sell, then click on the category I want to see. The same with the Forums - click on Discussion Forums, then click on the forums (planes, electric, etc ) to view the forums I want. The new format is (to me anyway ) a waste of time. Yes, it looks "pretty", however, I am at the site for the knowledge/information exchange between members, not for the "pretty". If there is a way to bypass this format and use the old, less time wasting, format I would appreciate it if you could tell me how to do it. Thanks. |

RE: How do get rid of this format ?
That's actually NOT a good idea. That page will be gone and the files that depend on it will be outdated, resulting in more frustration for you. You can still one-click from the home page (or any page) to the forum you want, just slide your mouse over the forum button and select the area you want.
As for the buy & sell area, we want folks to go to the featured page first to give members who feature their ad a chance to show off what they have. If you have set your "universe" the home page in the market will automatically display the types of things you are interested in (e.g. helicopters, if that is what your universe is set to). Also, we might add specific categories to the Buy & Sell menu up top. The changes were not to make the site "pretty". Rather they were to clear up confusion among some members in quickly finding things. In your case, only one area is affected (market) and at most it is one extra click. I'm not minimizing your issue, just putting it in perspective so you understand the balance we are trying to achieve. I'll chat with Marc about the menu solution. |
RE: How do get rid of this format ?
I agree, what an annoying and user unfriendly idea, losing the quickest way to the market is not by any means likely to send more people by the feature page. I have "my forums" bookmarked as my home page. When I link to rcu it goes straight to my forums as most people I know do. Then I used to quickly click on buy and sell to go to the classifieds, even if it was just to browse which I did every day. Now that immediately available link has gone, it is not instantly in my view attracting me to the classifieds as it once was. If you are trying to stop people by-passing the feature page that is a fine idea, you should have just removed the drop downs and just left a single link to buy and sell on every page then they could not have gone straight to a search or whatever. If you add this one link to "buy and sell" then whichever page a user bookmarks as home there will be a single click link to the classifieds which will automatically go to the default feature page or the feature page of their area of interest if they have so designated. Just add one link to "buy and sell" to the site template and your featured sellers and advertisers will be happy and so will we users.
Good Luck Paul |

The "Buy & Sell" button you suggest sits atop every page of the site. You can click it and it takes you right to the market home page and it features items in your interest area. On the home page, the button appears twice (once on top and once on the left). What am I missing?? Michael |

Michael,
not on my system nor my buddies . There is just the home button. I thought that it must be a mistake. I think there must be a glitch somewhere then . Just tried it on netscape and still no joy. Here is a printscreen of this page, see no link to the classifieds. Thanks Paul |

RE: How do get rid of this format ?
It always worked before until this change happened, now I see.
it's your Norton Internet Security wreaking havoc. Adjust the settings and you'll see the buttons. Nobody in their right mind would design a navigation system like that!!! So if I turn ad blocker off for the whole of ie then I can get the nav bar back. What happened? any idea. Good Luck Paul |
RE: How do get rid of this format ?
Your ad blocker has run amuck. It's blocking legitmate javascript that we use to provide dropdown menus atop every page. Did you try turning it off???
|
RE: How do get rid of this format ?
Paul, I put in some new code that I'd like you to test if you don't mind.
Turn ON your Norton Internet Security Ad Blocking software so that it blocks out the buttons at the top of the page. Then, go to the home page of the site and see if you get a message telling you what's happening. Thanks VERY much. Michael |
RE: How do get rid of this format ?
Campy, can you try the same thing as I asked Paul to try? See my previous post.

RE: How do get rid of this format ?
The pop up appears on every page, perhaps you could get it to just show once per visit. Now I am sorry but I am going to annoy you. Please explain to me how you can say norton is malfunctioning when it was fine until you added the new code. I also think that it is very unfair to make some less experienced users think that their security software is malfunctioning when it is quite satisfactory. I understand how sometimes things we want to code in our pages can trigger these reactions, especially nowadays with javascript activex etc. I also understand how your code is benign and for the host an important part of the site, but, causing inexperienced users to dabble in what they may now believe is a faulty piece of software is I think at least a little reckless. I know we always want to stomp our feet and say our side of the street is clean but I think the warning at least could say that ther is an incompatability with Norton and the new site and can be easily solved by following your instructions. Less dramatic and seems a little more likely than the other option. If you wanted the navigation buttons to be available even with Norton in its present mode it would be very easy to code. That is how you had it before, I would not expect that as I am quite happy to pay for my viewing by seeing the ads, I think everyone else should too. It is just your statement that Norton is " playing havoc" and "malfunctioning" is extreme at the very least.

RE: How do get rid of this format ?
Yeah... I do not like the new format... and I know you get $$$ from ads pop ups
but this is.... Well lets just say Very much UNLIKED!!!!... It's just Too Much!!!!! Something need to change.... Guess I know what.... |
RE: How do get rid of this format ?
update:
bug in our code. we put it there because norton was blocking our main navigation buttons (and ads were a side effect too). I pulled the code as it was not functioning correctly obviously. If you don't see the nav buttons at the top of every page properly make sure you set norton to allow ads and popups on rcu. we don't do any ad popups ever and the ad blocker on norton is BAD and blocks our menus that allow you to navigate rcu |

It is just your statement that Norton is " playing havoc" and "malfunctioning" is extreme at the very least. Good Luck Paul Here's what happened: We have the same top navigational code and have for roughly two years. In one of the minor changes (e.g. adding an item to a menu), there is a word that Norton's "intelligent" software uses as one of its triggers for ad software. When Norton installs on your system, it integrates with your browser. That means, when a page gets served from RCU it goes to NORTON on your system FIRST and THEN to your browser. While Norton has the page, it deposits a nasty little snippet of code into the page that literally breaks the javascript that it believes is either a pop up or ad software. We know this to be true. Norton doesn't dispute it. Today, after receiving a rash of incidences (that correspond with some updates in Norton), I installed a detector into our pages so that when Norton puts its little failure snippet of code in, our software says "hey, Norton just flagged this page" and pops up that annoying warning box you saw earlier tonight. We have since pulled that warning because it turns out that Norton puts their nasty code in when you have a pop up or something that seems like it could be a pop up on the page (e.g. our email renewal warning that was a pop up until I changed IT also today). So, we are not being unfair. Our Market Mod works at Dell and he told me today that they get TONS of complaints about Norton and it's blunt instrument approach to blocking ads and pop ups. As a programmer, I find it impossible to work with their software. I installed it on my own system to test and find it completely intrusive. As soon as we work through the issues, it's going in the garbage. McAfee has a much better product. That's the story and I'm stickin' to it! :D Michael |
RE: How do get rid of this format ?
Michael... I know what you mean about Norton, Had it for the last two yrs.
and thinking about a switch... But it won't be Mcafee... Had problems with them also.. They were the first(4yrs), Norton(2yrs) is my second... I'm looking at the newer one's now... They are needed..... Anyway guess you changed the code??? for all is working now as before with Norton "on"... I did remove a few new toolbar tools that was recently installed.. Reason for the ??? ANyway it's great to know you will work on these problems, instead of just saying this or that as so many do!! Thank You Ron |
RE: How do get rid of this format ?
NP Ron. We removed the dynamic menus as the default. Users can individually turn them back on if they wish....it is not a permanent solution, but it got us around the critical issue. thanks for your feedback on this.

RE: How do get rid of this format ?
Hi again MK and all...
Not sure if I'm just super slow, and so far behind everyone else... But I just talked to Norton and........................ I was turning the ad and popup blocker on / off from the main NIS2005 page or just left the dropdown menu off on RCU.... But...... You see, I do not leave the Norton toolbars active(shown) in Internet Explore..... And this is the way to allow the ads/ popup or what ever Norton thinks it's seeing for each individual site to be allowed.. You don't have to leave it shown, Just activate it to uncheck the ads/popup then re- hide it.. That way you can see all, But still have the blocker on for other sites... So, I leave the ads popups active in the main NIS 2005. Then I open RCU with I. E. and uncheck the ads and popup from the toolbar menu of I.E. for NIS 2005.... For RCU, I leave ads "unchecked" and popups "checked".... And all is working as it was:-)... As I said, I'm most likely the last to know this but thought I'd post it.... Just in case.. Have a Great Day People Now if I could only get Norton to buy my next plane:-) |
