Default Which 500 clone to buy???

I'm thinking about moving up to a 500 and would like to hear some opinions.

I was looking at the HK-500GT. Then after some reading was thinking about a HK-500CMT.
That led to looking at the EXI'ls. But they don't include blades.
Do the EXI's have the same problem with the belt being too tight like the HK's? And soft screws?
This is what it would cost me shipped for each kit:

HK500GT $80.04
HK500CMT $131.33
EXI 500 plastic edition $65.85 (- 5% discount code) = $62.56
EXI 500 CF edition $140.15 (- 5% discount code) = $133.14
CopterX CX 500SE V2 Kit $170.83
Tarot 500 ESP Metal Kit $192.71 (Miracle Mart) - $221.72 (Infinity Hobby)

I know how to fly and will be doing mild 3D.
So let me know what you like/hate/recommend.

Thanks.

Will,

I have been researching this subject for several months now and have come to the conclusion that the HK500, EXI500 and CopterX 500 are all the same heli with different colored anodizing made by SKYA. If you look at images of these 3 brands on the Internet, you will see that the parts all look the same. If you compare any of these to the name brand product, you will see several differences in the head and tail components.

I have had several clone heli's and only one of those was worth the effort. I started with an EXI and wound up replacing all kinds of parts and the bearings went bad very fast. Next was a Copterx; it had better quality overall but I still had issues and had to replace parts due to early failure or poor quality from the start. I have not had a HK heli but search around and you will find countless posts of people with issues (especially on their 500 size helis)

The one brand I haven't had any issues with is Tarot. I purchased a Tarot 450 Pro and it's been great! It's identical to the Align Pro in every way and I would even guess that it comes out of the same factory without the Align name on it.

As I move to a 500, I am going to stick with either a Tarot 500 ESP or a Flasher 500 ESP. Tho, these brands are higher priced than the EXI, Copeterx and HK, they look to be identical (from what I can see) to an Align 500 ESP and are made using 7075 aluminum vs softer 6061 alum. The flasher is made by Phoenixtech and has been recently updated with a very nice Orange canopy and TT drive. The Tarot is hard to find with the Torque tube tail and so I will most likely go with the Flasher. In the US, the Flasher goes by the brand name of Chaos (Chaos 500 Pro).

Try Searching "Chaos 500 Pro" and you will find 2 dealers in the US. Each is selling it for $200 and I believe one has free shipping this weekend.

What are you doing for electronics?

Will,

What are you doing for electronics?
Hey grawyl,

Thanks for sharing your insight.
To be honest I'm trying to do this on the cheap, like most of us here on a budget. That is why I was looking at the 500GT.
And I was thinking about going with inexpensive HK and Turnigy stuff for electronics.
Which reminds me if anyone wants to give opinions on good/bad with that stuff, please chime in.
And has anyone used the CopterX 500 Value Electronic Parts Package?

http://www.ehirobo.com/shop/product_...oducts_id=8477

I'm currently flying EXI 450's and haven't had any problems with them.

Yes I have the copterx value package
Mine seems to work ok havent had any real problems.
I have heard of some people having problems with the esc not working or burning up the programming directions are something to be desired
I use them on the copterx 500

I wouldn't bother with the hk 500s too many problems to workout IMO

Cant talk about the exi 500s never had one

I have an HK500GT, and first thing you must do if you get the kit is get the metal tail unit. As described in many posts, the plastic tail snapped (screw snapped in the shaft) after 5 batteries. Other than that, it's a good heli. Note that the tail gear stripped because the tail boom was too tight causing the belt to be too tight as well. Bought an Align tail boom, but it was still too tight. Had to shave about 1/8 inch off, and now everything is fine. I'm running Turnigy 6S 20C 3000mah batteries. Enough power for me, but would recommend higher C rating (they were sold out when I bought mine). If you want to build cheap, then the HK401B gyro will do a fair job, but now great. I have two and on my 450, the tail does tend to wander left. I got an Align GP780 on eBay for a good price that I use on my 500GT.

Even the Align kits suffer from soft screws (see recent posts). RTL Fastners and RCScrewz offer screw kits.

Anyone know if the Tarot metal tail will fit the EXI/HK?

The design is like the align.

EXI/HK is different

I bought a EXI450 clone and they are made quite cheap. Parts don't hold up well in a crash and the screws can be a pain to get out. If you plan on upgrading to Align parts, then do yourself a favor and just get an Align. By the time you upgrade, it ends up being the same or a bit more. If you plan on keeping it cheap, then that is fine. I found out that one good crash and I had to replace a lot of unexpected parts. It cost me good too. If you really want a clone, EXI is in the states and you will receive it faster. As far as the clones go, I don't think one is better over the other.

The HK part you are showing is not the part the would break. It's the blade holder. Try this part: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=10127 . It is a more complete unit than teh others (more like the xheli.com part).

Do remember to take everything apart and put blue loctite on every screw. I know

I have just assemble the EXI 500 plastic kit. having used the 450 size kits before, i was expecting very cheap hardware holding it together. I was surprised when i got the 500 kit, the screws are pretty good. they seem to be much better than the smaller kits. I did go through it and lock tighted the bolts though. with so many metal to metal bolts that took awhile. i've just now got it assembled, and am trying to figure out which battery to get for it, so it hasn't actually flown yet. hopefully that will be soon. here's what i have:
EXI 500 plastic kit $60.
GY48V headklock gyro $13
Volcano Series 60A Brushless ESC $60.00
Carbon Fibre main blade for electric 500 rc helicopter(430mm) White $14
Optima 500 Brushless Motor 3025-1500KV 650W $32
3- Tower hobbies cs-35 servos for cyclic. $63
Futaba S9257 servo for the tail ( I already had this from another project)

So i've got about $250 in it now, maybe spend another $100 for the battery. if i wreck it, i'll take the good parts and put them in another frame and keep flying!.
inexpensive way to fly 500's.

Ouch. I looked at the battery prices, and it seems much higher than Turnigy batteries from HobbyKing.

I'm getting another HK500GT I wish I never sold the last one to buy a 600. They are very good I had three of them. The 600 is another story because of thier size they are a whole new adventure with many other things to watch out for not worth it in my opinion that is why I'm selling mine and going back to the HK500 I can work better with those

The 600 is more docile doesn't get into trouble as fast as a 450 the parts are a fair bit more expensive. The 500 is fairly docile it too is much better than a 450 I also found the parts easier to get, cheaper too and you can get that one out of trouble faster than with the 600. I have had them from 250 and up to 600 in my opinion 500 is the best deal for the common man and easy to fly.

You sold the last one. What happened to the first two?
Did you fly them stock or what did you find needed replacing right from the start?

Thanks.

i went with the EXI plastic version, which still comes with alot of metal parts, seems very nice and i am pleased with the quality, i did upgrade some parts to align mostly for weight savings im still waiting for the silver align vert and horizontal stabilizer set i also wantedto add some color hence the orange..and i like carbon fiber. I also polished some of the aluminium parts for a different look. i do suggest replacing the screws as with any clone to a higher quality. but all in all i give this clone a pretty high rating. Hereare a couplecrappy cell phone pics
