Default DS-285 servos on T-rex 450 SEV2

I've just got hold of a Trex SE V2 minus cyclic servos. I've got three spare DS-285's lying around. My question is will they be suitable for my new beast or am I better off getting Hitec Hs-65's or even HS-5065's ? All advice appreciated...

Cheers,
Brett

I ran those servos in my TREX when I first built it. They work great, but because they are plastic geared, they aren't very durable. I am a newbie and when I first started flying, I crashed a few times. Two of the servos crapped out on me after the 5th crash or so.

If you have them, use them. Hopefully, you're better than me and won't crash so much.

I have since ordered a set of metal replacement gears for them and I plan on re-building them at some point in the near future. Then, I'll have a good extra set of servos if anything happens to the HS65MG's that I replaced them with. [8D]

Thanks Bryfly,
I'll use them for now and then maybe replace them with the mg's or re-gear them with metal gears.. This is my third heli , after CX-2 and Belt-CP.. though I'm in no way a proficient pilot...

cheers,
Brett

They are slower than the 65's but ok for learning once you get into hard 3D you'll want something with more torque and faster response. I've got the 285's in my king2 but that's for scale anyway so no big deal. Only 56 or 65's in my 450s.

For what its worth, I work full time building helicopters. Per customer requests we put hs65hb's in almost everything we build.

They both have ups and downs. The mg gears are more tolerant of impact, but the energy from the crash has to go somewhere. I have seen crashes where the gears survived but the rest of the servo and linkages were destroyed. The energy from a crash will be absorbed by something! The hb's will strip out and all you have to do is replace gears. The issue with the hbs is that you might be replacing alot of gears. Gears are cheap compared to rebuilding the whole head and having to replace the servo case. It is just like the metal canopy mounts, in a crash they force the cf frame to absorb the impact rather than the plastic studs that shear off. Again its cheaper to replace a broken stud than one side of a frame.

I sell the hb's because thats what the market wants. If you do decide to go with them check out my web site www.therotorworks.com and use the coupon code rotorworks10 to get 10% off. I am not trying to be pushy, but if you are going to get the hb's you might as well save some money!! If you decide to get the mg's you won't be making a bad choice either, i just don't stok them because they don't sell very well. This code will work for any customer on their first order with us.

Dennis,
I hadn't considered that .. Of course the load is going to have to go somewhere... cheaper and faster to replace gears than head.. and that's if the head is the only thing damaged..
checking out your site now....

cheers,
Brett

From all of the posts I have read here on the forums, it seems to me that the HS-65 MG is the standard right now for the cyclic servos.

I can apreciate that. I am just going by what i experience when i build them for customers(and rebuild). There are always other options. Like i stated above they are both good choices.

There is another disadvantage to the metalgears, They are heavier! It's not a hugh difference but it all adds up.

Don't the metal gears wear out faster than the HB's. I read that it is a safe thing to change the metal gears after every flying season. If that is true wouldn't that get expensive replacing them.

DS285s on my 450s, 60 flights, 3 crashes, 3 sets of gears (2 in 1 crash). The first one I had to replace gears on was a lot of work, but the 3rd set was kinda easy... I'm flying inverted backward figure 8s, and dont feel like replacing the 285s before upgrading the 430x motor. Just my 0.002

stay away from the 5065MG's I bought four and they stall at about 6 oz ,almost crashed my Sebart KATANA 30E and LHS will NOT take them back. I think they have bugs in them. I have sent in my brand new servos to HITEC for an Autopsy
