flying my 450SA around at the field and brought her back in because the trim was a little off... trimmed it out and lifted up to about a 1 foot hover and did a piro... well it started drifting in the piro and I overcorrected then I guess I dropped the collective a hair and the skids caught sliding sideways.
total damage.
blades
main grips
landing gear
flybar
flybar control set and seesaw holder
maingear and one way (gotta get quicker on that T-hold)
at least I get an excuse to upgrade to aluminium

Unstable ~
Thanks for sharing that... We all have had our fair share of crashes.
It justs makes ya a better pilot in the long run... Can I make a suggestion looking at your pics ? It could save ya a rear tail servo on the next crash... If I were you, I would mount your tail servo on the other side of the boom... Reason being, is where it is mounted at right now it is in jeapordy of the mains and flybar hitting it during a bad crash as the blades rotate clockwise and will hit that servo first if bad luck strikes again... Mounting it on the other side, gives it just that little bit of added protection of the boom... Some have had there luck fine with it there, while others have not...
But looking good ! Hopefully you'll get her in the air soon.....
Happy flyin !

sorry about your crash unstable. [
] that's a good clean wiring you got on the trex.
+1 on michael's suggestion on moving the servo to the other side. i wanted to mount my gyro on the bottom like you did but the groves wont make the gy401 seat right. i guess the logitech gyro is a better fit since its smaller.
other than that like bryflyguy said ALTITUDE is your friend.

Ouch, sorry too see. I also agree with Jeff but I have to say kudos on your gyro placement. I hope you get her back in the air soon. Make sure to inspect her very closely. SA's have a lot of plastic and they don't show breaks as well as metal. Make sure to check the servos, too!
God Bless Ya,

Are you going the full metal head?
I see good prices sometimes on Ebay for the entire V2 headset.
I have my tail servo mounted on the same side, Time for me to rethink my strategy

yeah.. I was thinking about moving the servo but have been to lazy.. now that its mostly apart I think I will...
and that is the Hitec brand gyro (rebadged logitec) the combo with the HSG-5083MG, I was really happy it fit right there, seems to hold the tail real solid too.
altitude is my friend but I was just doing a simple piro (not even fast).... its always the simple things that get you.. oh well... parts should be in at the local hobby shop by thurs.. everything I broke is going aluminium and some carbon fiber blades.
I am kinda happy its winter... the amount of broke vs. working planes/heli/cars is getting a bit high... gotta put in some shop time.

You also bent the main shaft, Feathering shaft, a couple of control links and of course the horizontal stabilizer.
I can see it in the pics.

During the repairs, it would be a good idea to place your tail servo on the other side of the tail boom and adjust the directional throw accordingly....Don't forget THAT step [:@]
The servo on the left side of the boom has a better chance of survival (blade/paddle strike) during a good crash.
EDIT UPDATE: I just 'read' J-Michael's post about the tail servo... sorry for the echo post [8D]

yay all back together. now with added bling
yes I moved the servo to the opposite side
empty wallet
the feathering and main shaft were both fine I pulled them out and did the glass test. after assembly I spun it up and no unusual vibrations
now all I need is a good flying day... last sunday was really gusty for a trim flight. I need to win the lotto and buy a hangar or something.

The glass test is a way to tell if the main shaft, feathering spindle, etc is bent. Take the shaft, put it on a piece of glass, glass table or whatever and roll it. look somewhere around eye level and inbetween the light reflection off the glass and the complete flatness you can tell if the shafts are bent...

No I'm not new to the forums...
I guess the point is not to do a piro one foot off the ground if you don't know what you
are doing.

If you know what you're doing that means you don't make mistakes???

maingear and one way (gotta get quicker on that T-hold)
at least I get an excuse to upgrade to aluminium

Just hauling butt being a show off for a friend. He just bought a new 450, so I thought I would fly mine and put on a show. Man he was real impressed
I looked over and said "welcome to RC helicopters"!!
But it's back in the air now, and flies great.

bloftin:
nice one
mine is back in the air also.. flew it the other week but it seems to be windy and cold every weekend so I only got a few quick flights in (with pauses till the feeling came back into my fingers [
] )
I guess its truly the start of "building season" :sigh:
I only have about 7 projects in my workshop to do this winter.
