Default Our new Trex 500 cyclic response is very slow compared to our Trex 450!

Our new Trex 500 seems to have a much slower response to the cyclic imputs then does our Trex 450! Is that normal or is that directly related to headspeed? We are running the stock Align 500L motor, stock Align ESC, Align 425 carbon fiber main rotor blades, and a 12T pinion! We also have the balls mounted on the furthest hole out on the servo arm (4th hole) on our Futaba S9650 cyclic servos! We are running 95% on the throttle curve using the governor mode! What can we do to improve the cyclic response? Thanks.

First of all, avoid double posting!

Second of all, what is this constant reference to "we"?

The 500 is a bigger Heli than the 450 and it will have a slower response. Lighten up the paddles and check your cyclic pitch range.

Are you running a seperate BEC ? If not, the default setting on the stock esc is set for 5.5 V according to my manual... Not sure what the 9650's can handle, as I went with the Programmable HS-5245 MG Digital's, You can set the esc to run at 6v which should give ya a better speed of the servo's.... I went with running a seperate BEC by Castle Creations 10 Amp, 4.8v-9.0v selectable output one... Let us know....

Default RE: Our new Trex 500 cyclic response is very slow compared to our Trex 450!

Thank you guys for the input! First of all, I did not realize I did a double post, and when I did, I could not figure out how to get rid of one of them! Secondly, if it matters, the we reference is to my son and I which are trying to sort out our new Trex 500! We have a Trex 450 and a Trex 600, and it just seemed like the 500 cyclic response was slower than both the 450 and 600! We were just curious if there was something we to do to increase the cyclic response, like maybe going to a bigger pinion for some more headspeed! No, I am not using a separate BEC, however, I believe my Align ESC is supposed to be selectable for 5.0V or 6.0V and my Futaba Digital S9650 Servos will run on 6.0V! However, I not exactly sure how you select between the two? Thanks again for your response!

I'll post the obvious... have you checked the cyclic pitch range with your 500 with a pitch gauge?

Yes! -2.0 degrees at bottom, +3.5 at middle, and +11.0 at top!

mmm... the 450 had +-6ΒΊ for elevator and aileron cyclic and +-11ΒΊ pitch. Check your radio programming, maybe your swash mix in too low.

We went to a 13T pinion and got the headspeed up, along with adding a set of CY Stubz lightweight CF paddles and the cyclic response has improved immensely! We are happy now! Thanks guys for all of your help!

Bro, he asked you about cyclic pitch, not collective pitch. Cyclic pitch is what determines your roll and flip rate...you should have about 8 degree's of cyclic pitch and you'll roll and flip plenty fast! Cyclic pitch is determined by your swash mix settings for AIL/ELE

That's cool you got the stubz paddles...you did get the 393 ones not the 3mm ones yes? They are super fast.

Set cyclic pitch to at least 8 deg and those paddles and you'll be amazed!

Good luck,
Skarn

Hey, I have to ask...why are you set up this way? If doing loops, rolls and flip, you should have a linear pitch curve giving you fill -11 at bottom, ZERO at center and +11 at top. You definitely want zero at center/50.

We are still learning to fly these things! All we are doing now is sport flying! Once we master flying these things, then we will set them up as you recommended! Thanks.

I understand but you really want to have zero pitch at mid stick! You will make your learning curve much longer/harder if you learn to fly this way...then have to re-learn another way all over again.

Man I with my son had even the slightest interst in RC! He's about to turn 16 and could care less.

Good luck,

Skarn,

I understand where you are coming from! But, our primary interest is in scale and sport flying! We have a scale NH-90 with a PHT-3 JetCat turbine in it, as well as a MoBB PowerCat pod and boom with a PHT-3 turbine in it that we will be flying soon! We also have two Funkey Jet Rangers, one with a Trex 600E in it and the other with a Thunder Tiger 620E in it with a 4-bladed head and a HeliCommand Rigid on it! I was out of RC helicopters for about 5 years, until I managed to get my 26 year old son interested in it and now as you can see we are all in! It is nice to have a flying buddy again!

We flew our 500 today for the first time with the new CY Stubz 393 paddles and they are amazing! They are quick, smooth and very stable!

I just put a set of CY Stubz 393 CF paddles on my stock Trex 500 and what a difference! The paddles make it quick, smooth, very stable and rock solid in FF!

Where do you get these paddles?

If you go to the curtisyoundblood.com site, they tell you where you can buy their stuff.

Readyheli is one
RCHover is another.
