Just Bought a TRex SE, Help Me with Picking Electronics!
Well, I couldn't be more giddy. I bit the bullet and bought my first TRex, the SE model. What I need from you TRex experts is a hand in picking the radio, receiver, servos and gyro. While at my LHS, I noticed an issue of RC Heli magazine that had a review of my new heli, so I bought it. For the review, they used the JR 9303 with the R770 receiver, 3 Hitec HS-56hb servos, and Airtronics 94761Z servo for the rudder and the Futaba GY401 gyro. While I'm cool with the servos and gyro used for their test review, the radio is a bit more money than I would like to spend at this point in time ($550). So, since they found the servos and gyro used all fit the heli well without modification, unless anyone out there knows something they don't, I'd like to just go with what they used.
That brings us to the radio and receiver. What can you guys recommend for under $300 that works well with the SE? While I'm not flying any 3D stunts yet, I do plan on doing it in the future as my skills progress, so I want something that will compliment the SE for 3D flying, but at the same time, I do have a budget. Unless it's absolutely necessary, I don't want something with every bell and whistle that could possibly be hung on a radio. I'd like to keep it as simple as possible while still giving me room to grow. Thanks! |

Almost any quality set up will work well.
I prefer the HS 65 HB,or HM for the swash, the Fut 9650 for the tail, & 410 is excellent. I'm using the Fut 8UHPS Xmitter (also expensive), & Hitec dual conversion(shift) electra Lloyd |

Thanks.
If you guys could supply links to recommended radios, I would appreciate it! [8D] |

Eddie,
This is the radio I bought with Heli's in mind , actually nitro but I'm starting out with electric. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXGAF5**&P=3 and Tower is having rebates !! I love free stuff !! They are also giving 25.00 off orders over 199.00 I'd try to stay above channel 16 , if you decide to use this with any small electric planes that use a single conversion rx you can have interference problems. Thats with all brands on the low channels and single conversion. Andy |

Check out the JR6102 radio. It's a very nice radio and less expensive. Find it at www.jrradios.com. You can also look at the Spektrum DX6, but it's features are limited.
I also use the JR 770 PCM receiver in my Rex with a JR8103 Tx and they are great. The JR6102 can be puchased with the 770 PCM Rx if you choose, the 700 and 610UL are also terrific Rx's. I have them all and have never had a glitch with any of them. I prefer PCM on helis though. |

The Spektrum DX6 is a very attractive package. Transmitter, receiver and 4 micro-servos for 200 bucks. Any real drawbacks to this package?

My LHS has the DX6 and JR6102 in stock at the moment. Prices are $199 and $269 respectively. I guess it's going to be one of these two. Come on, guys, help me out. Servo and receiver wise, is there a clear-cut winner here?

DX6 is a good parkflyer radio but it's lacking (feature wise) for helicopters as I understand it. It only has 3 point throttle and pitch curves which means all you can ever have for pitch setup is a linear curve. Good if you want hard 3D, not so good if you want scale flight or you're starting out and want to soften up the hover range. Of course, the DX6 is also pretty much glitch and interference proof, so that's a definite plus.
The XP6102 is a nice radio. I've got one here, and though i'm not using it, i'm impressed by it's feel and features. Comfortable to hold and it has a pretty nice heli program, so if that's one you were looking at, i'd personally suggest that. |

I know with my planes no matter if its single or dual conversion I get glitches twitches and all sorts of goofy stuff. With PCM everything is calm , nothing happens unless you tell it to. I know I'm going to have to wait a little longer to build my T-Rex because of the extra cost , but to me it will be worth it !

ORIGINAL: NitroEddie The Spektrum DX6 is a very attractive package. Transmitter, receiver and 4 micro-servos for 200 bucks. Any real drawbacks to this package? The DX is totally glitch free, it's short antennas are easily hidden. The pros will all state that the DX6 has only 3 point curves instead of 5, but at my stage of flying that hasn't been a problem, and I really like not having to worry about freq tags and interfernece from other tx's. |

I prefer PCM in helis because of the programmable fail safe. The likelihood of glitching or problems with a heli is higher IMO and I'd like to know that if something goes wrong my heli is not gonna fly off and hit something, but rather it will just stop and fall out of the sky right where it is. PCM also helps to reduce glitching and on an electric heli this is paramount IMO.
Get the 6102 then you will be pleased with it. The 610UL Rx it comes with is a great little FM Rx. I have 2 of them on 3D planks and have never had a problem. |

Hitec Hs-65's for swashplate and Hs-81 for tail, futaba 240 or 401 gyro, Hitec electron 6 receiver, And Airtronics RD8000 or RD 6000 transmitter. All of this can be found at www.towerhobbies.com or www.helihobby.com Also you could opt to buy the quark 33 speed control. It has a failsafe feature that kills the motor if the radio signal is lost.

RE: Just Bought a TRex SE, Help Me with Picking Electronics!
I'm running a spektrum on my MX400 Pro, and while I'm not a pro at helis, I am a feature freak. And it took a lot to suck it up and buy the dx6 because of the lack of features, but man was it worth it. The 3-point throttle/pitch curves really aren't a big deal especially since I'm using a governor speed control. My normal and idle up pitch/throttle curves are the same with the exception of 0 throttle at bottom stick on throttle and 50% pitch on the pitch curve to keep it from smacking itself into the ground. It also has exponentials that allow you to desensetize it around center. Dual rates, end points on all 6 channels, plus failsafes that are foolproof.
Now on to the good stuff: I was having lots of glitching problems with my electron 6 and Optic 6 transmitter. I went and got the spektrum and guess what? Went away completely. I've never flown anything that felt so connected to the transmitter. I guess it's up to you in the end though. If you want mroe features, go for the 6102. If you want something that just WILL NOT glitch, get the spektrum. I'm not saying the 6102 will glitch, but the spektrum is about guaranteed not to. Just do yourself a favor and don't use the servos they give you. Find something better. lol -Eric |
