thinking about getting my first heli
well as the title says in thinking about get my first heli this winter i think i want a trex 450 of some sort. just was wondering what you all thought was a good one i have been reading and the one i like keeps coming up the T-Rex 450XL (CDE) 3D eCCPM(yellow) Micro Helicopter kit. not sure if its a wise idea for a beginner like me though i know it wont get flow till spring except hovering which i can do inside. also i have been looking around at radios in the 200 dollar range but havent been able to figure out whats good and whats not.

RE: thinking about getting my first heli
Forget about hovering a T-rex inside unless your experienced and have a BIIIIIIIIIIIIG room.
These things are scary. But I love mine, lol |
RE: thinking about getting my first heli
MY FIRST HELI WAS THE BLADE CP AND WHEN I LEARNED HOW TO HOVER I THOUGHT THAT THE BLADE WAS COOL. BUT WHEN TRYING TO FLY IT I LEARNED THAT ITS NOT. I BOUGHT THE REALFLIGHT G3 AND A WALKERA 36. IN A COUPLE OF DAYS I WAS FLYING BUT I STILL WASNT HAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THAT HELI. NOW I HAVE THE TREX 450XL HDE DELUXE EDITION . IM LEARNING THE HARD WAY ON SETUP AND ALL BUT WHEN THIS THING IN THE AIR IT AWESOME. TREX, NO MATTER WHICH ONE YOU GET, I THINK IS THE BEST ONE TO START OFF WITH. ONE TUFF HELI. AS FOR THE RADIO IM USING AN AIRTRONICS RD 6000 SUPER THAT IVE HAD FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. GREAT RADIO! BUT IF YOUR TRYING TO STAY UNDER 200 YOU MIGHT TRY AND SEE WHAT USED ONES THEY HAVE FOR SALE HERE. LOOK FOR 7 CHANNEL RADIOS WITH HELI FUNTIONS. OH YAH, STAY AWAY FROM THE COMBO HELI KIT WITH THE 25A ESC. MIKE

RE: thinking about getting my first heli
I HOVERED MY TREX IN MY LIVING ROOM BUT AFTER I PRACTICED ON THE SIMULATOR. DIDNT CRASH UNTIL I TOOK OUTSIDE!@#

RE: thinking about getting my first heli
The T Rex is the way to go if the price dosent scare you.....as for hovering in the living room..or any room for that matter...it better be the size of a basketball court. When this thing spools up it sounds like a beast compared to a smaller blade CP or something else. Also If it hits anything like a wall or a couch or a nice coffee table....IT WILL LEAVE A MARK.
Get the rex and a SIM.... TOWER |
RE: thinking about getting my first heli
Pfft I can hove in my livingroom but where is the fun in that... next thing you know "maybe I can practice nose left / right" then WHACK... and yes it can be very dangerous indoors I would imagine... if you hit something and a blade cracked... ouch.
Nope, eventhough hovering inside is not all that hard... keeping it in control once there maybe... the Rex is an outside toy unless as above you ahve a local gym to fly in. |
RE: thinking about getting my first heli
Stay out of the ceiling fan if you fly indoors (dont ask how I know that, just trust me on this)
Hey Mike, caps is considered shouting, thanks. |
RE: thinking about getting my first heli
thanks for the help
as far as TX i was thinking maybe a Hitec Eclipse 7 but then again i honestly dont know anything when it comes to a heli TX. price isnt a concern(kind of) i mean i dont want to go cheap and be sorry later it just means it will take more time to get it and have it fly if i go all out with all the stuff i will need. |
RE: thinking about getting my first heli
hey dont waste your two hundred on a walkera heli just so u know i started with a walkera 36 its a good trainer but when something breaks the only way to obtain parts is online and they arent cheap either, well even if your limit is 200 then go for a eflight blade cx its a great trainer its double blade and no tail blade i didnt want to start off with it because i thought it looked cheap but after wasting 300 dollars in parts and shipping for walkera 36 i thought twise and i have flown it before the cx and its very nice and stable my friend bought on and after he learned to fly i let him tryout with my surpervision my trex 450xl and i was very suprised as he was able to get used to the heli very fast and flyed it pretty good as he had a good trainer then he said this heli is easy to control i was sure sure yeah well it is very stable but if no training it wont. the cx is 180 dollars dont get the blade cp its a very unstable helicopter unless you train alot i mean alot

You need to look at -beginers-helicopters first or you will be sorry.

Ditto.
Think of it this way. Say you've never even ridden a bicycle. Would you try to ride your friend's Kawi 900 cc pocket rocket? In your living room? Well, maybe you would. But would you be very successful? Please start with a milder helicopter. Many have had a lot of fun with coaxials until they can hover, then go on to something like the BCPP as an intermediate step before the TRex. I do hover my MX400Pro in the living room but it is very scary and if it hit me it would probably kill me. And as far as a radio goes, the Spektrum DX6/DX7 is definitely the way to go. |
RE: thinking about getting my first heli
I cannot agree more with drtmind01. I fly a T-Rex and am currently learning 3D with it. Although the heli is an astounding heli to fly and a very stable 3D'er, to start with one (in my opinion) would be a mistake. I work at a hobby store, am an avid flyer and I would consider myslef to be a good pilot. As a general rule I steer newbies to a coaxial type heli such as the blade cx or cx2. I still to this day love flying mine as it is so stable and you can have a blast indoors chasing the dog! For $200 you really cannot go wrong. The trex is a great heli, but get some practice and a simulator before you try flying one or one like it (such as the MX450), otherwise you might regret it! Just my 0.02 cents of course...

RE: thinking about getting my first heli
im a beginner and i bought a trex se and if i could go back i would buy the xl or sa. the parts are cheaper. and you will crash it it is only a matter of time. the thing about setting up is your going to have to do it eventually so might as well learn at the beginning of your project. there is a huge learning curve with these things s im finding out. i can hover in my garage but its really not a good idea. even worse idea to hover in house cause something might fail in flight or if you dont have a spektrum there coul be interference and bam there goes a lamp or a tv and then your heli. i'd stick to the trex sa or trex xl and get a dx6 to start with. good luck.
