Looking for advice for Trex 450 with 4s setup

Hi guys,

I need some advices, I'm preparing my T-rex 450 for AP and thinking it might be a good idea to upgrade its power plan as well so i'm planning to use 4s battery setup since from what i heard and researched the stock align esc will do fine for 4s setup without additional bec (please correct me if i'm wrong). I already stretched my T-rex with 350mm blades and boom from G5

This is my motor candidate, Scorpion SCHK2208-34 Motor

Specifications
Stator Diameter 22.0 mm (0.866 in)
Stator Thickness 8.0 mm (0.315 in)
No. of Stator Arms 9
No. of Magnet Poles 6
Motor Wind 24 Turn Delta
Motor Wire 5-Strand 0.19mm
Motor Kv 2600 RPM / Volt
No-Load Current (Io) 0.85 Amps @ 10 volts
Motor Resistance (Rm) 0.126 Ohms
Max Continuous Current 15 Amps
Max Continuous Power 160 Watts
Weight 39 Grams (1.38oz)
Outside Diameter 27.9 mm (1.097 in)
Shaft Diameter 3.17 mm (0.125 in)
Body Length 20.5 mm (1.087 in)
Overall Shaft Length 42.5 mm (1.673 in)

So here are my questions
Anyone has any experience with this setup ? What is your flight time ?

What pinion i should for this setup ?

Any suggestion on the battery ? I'm planning to use Rhino 1750mAh 4S 14.8v 20C, It's cheap and it got a good rep

I'm looking for power and longer flight time so if you have other power setup suggestion, please do not hesitate

i notice some folks use outrage g5 power system, but i don't like it because it is really difficult to find battery for this system other than the outrage 6s 1300mah

Thx a lot for your help guys

RE: Looking for advice for Trex 450 with 4s setup

Where did you hear that the stock Align ESc internal BEC is okay for a 4S setup? I would disagree, based upon my own experiments and other people's postings. I have a SportBEC that I used when I was experimenting with 4S. I would definitely invest in one. Other than that, your setup looks good. Use the HS calc at www.ReadyHeli.com to try out different pinions on a 4S setup to achieve the HS you want. Unless you're going for radical 3D and using CF blades, I would shoot for around 3K RPM.

Hi, BryFlyGuy67

Thx for your advice mate. its there on the specification of Align ESC

●Contimuous current:35Amps with porper air flow
●Surge current:45Amps for 15seconds
●Supporting motor types:2 poles to 10+poles in/outrunner brushless motors
●Supporting maximum RPM:2poles=>190,000rpm
●Supporting input voltage:5.5V~16.8V
●Supporting battery types: Li-ion/ Li-poly 2~4 cells, Ni-Mh 6-12 cells
●BEC output: Max current 2A
2 cells Lithium/6~7 cells Ni-Mh=>4servos
3 cells Lithium/8~9 cells Ni-Mh=>3servos
4 cells Lithium/10~12 cells Ni-Mh=>2servos
●Size:45X23X12m/m

It said that it support 2~4 cells lipo configuration. Anyway what setup would you recommend ?

RE: Looking for advice for Trex 450 with 4s setup

The main factor is the type of BEC that is built in to the Align ESC. IANAE on ESC's, but to my knowledge, the built-in BEC is a linear type, rather than a switching type like the BEC's that come in better ESC's and separate BEC's like the ParkBEC / SportBEC. Raising the voltage (by using a 4S pack) will result in a lot of heat build-up in the ESC, which is bad. The other issue is the limited total current (2A) that the BEC is capable of supplying, which may not be a factor for you if you're not using digital cyclic servos.

It may well work for you, but I'd hate to see you fry your ESC. I'm just passing along advice that was given to me when I experimented with 4S. Take it for what it's worth. ;)
