Thanks. How does everyone feel about the new push button ON/OFF operation on the new TNC? You push the button to turn the unit on and release the button to turn it off.

I do not like the push button on/off feature. I have too many other things to do with hands during engine start than to hold the on button. I have told Kurt this at Fromeco, and he says it is something to consider. I don't know if that means he is looking into changing it or not. I have a tach on the way and will see what I think.

I don't think I will like the push button on/off feature either. It might be a pain to hold down the button while tuning the engine, but I guess I will be able to adapt.

My Globee Tachometer when held up to a florescent light reads...

180 when set to 2 blades
120 when set to 3 blades
90 when set to 4 blades

The reading must be multiplied by 10.

Is this correct? I thought it would read 360 when set to 2 blades, etc.

It's playing off the power line frequency (60hz) that runs the lights. 60hz x 60 sec/min = 3600 cycles per minute. Divide by 2 blades = 1800 cycles per minute (or RPM in this case)

Well I was sold on the Glow Bee (latest model) but the nays are...so whats reliable enough to do 2-3-4 blade props on Gas as well as 2&4/C glow not to mention electrics.[sm=confused.gif][sm=confused.gif]

Put me in the pro Glo-Bee Intellitach column. I've had mine now for probably going on 4-5 years now? I haven't seen a prop it couldn't measure yet. Mine works really well, good solid readings all the time, every once in a while just have to change the angle of the tach, but never have failed to get a solid reading. Several members in my club have the GB as well, and I've never heard them complain about them either.

I have a really hard time understanding why the Glo-Bee gets such a bum rap on here, I think it's a great tach, for the money. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. If I paid 5X more, as the TNC costs, yeah, I'd expect better, but I don't know how much better you can get, as like I said, my GB has been very reliable. The GB is completely serviceable IMHO, and that extra money can be put toward 2 cases of fuel, or an engine, or a new receiver, or some servos, or a new kit, or some...

Mike,

You are correct, it should read 3600 when it's looking at AC lighting here in the US with our 60Hz power. If you are outside the US and have 50Hz power, it should read 3000 rpm.

You should send it in and have it checked out, 1800 is what it should read on 4 blades.

Crazy4RC,

Don't forget that there are 2 light "flashes" for each cycle in AC power... one when the voltage is positive (above the X axis) and one when the voltage is negative (below the X axis). Thus, for each cycle, there are 2 "flashes"... 2 flashes per cycle * 60cycles per second * 60 seconds / 2 prop blades = 3600 rpm.

I like my Glo Bee, never fails me. They all can give erratic readings at weird angles with the sun and even my buddy's TNC did that.

My Globee tacho is crap too. That's why I'm searching this thread for something better... lol

It's good to see that others have had issues with theirs too.

Cheers
Jason.

The Globee tach and others for that matter use a LDR (light dependent resistor) to sense the rpm of your engine. The 9 volt battery simply powers the LCD and other components.

Cheers

I have had the globee, hobbico and H9 tachs and they all work great and accurate. I have used all three at one time all they read the same rpm. i have engine check the tachs against the spectrum data logging and the DLE tachs and all the same.

Why do you need a expensive TNC tach....????? as a status of how much money you spent on one.

Guys remember a tach is a tuning tool not anything else. Just like a car dyno is a tuning tool not a hp/rpm bragging right tool lol

Use the tach to select props for your set up followed by in flight tests not to say at the field my engine turns 100 rpm more than yours lol.

get the cheap 20 dollar tach...

airraptor, yes the globee and others work. But you must be within a foot or closer to get a good reading. With the TNC you can be much farther away to get a good reading. Since I take my readings from behind the engine, the others can be problematic depending on the plane where the TNC just works. Also the TNC displays the highest reading of a session, a feature I find useful.

wasnt aware of that but are both a photovotec (sp) tach? how would one read farther than the other? the hold feature could be a good tuning tool also.

Could be the quality of the cell and the design of the interal circuit.

I've had nothing but trouble with my globee tach.

At idle, it reads over 40,000 on my OS .45 AX. At first, I thought "pretty damn impressive engine", then I figured out the tach was not reading correctly !!!

However, it does read the fluorescent lights correctly. Guess I can use it for that
