Default Got a deal - a Monster Beetle!

I got a real deal - a Monster Beetle!

Ok, doesn't sound that fantastic so far. But I got it for $30. Not bad, but it gets better.... came with an old Hilux pistol grip radio and two receivers that actually work. And a spare Monster Beetle for parts! And 3 sets of tires and wheels. And a bunch of other junk and crap and stuff and such, all in a Rubbermaid tote.

Still doesn't sound like anything worth bragging about I guess. Well, I spent the evening disassembling and cleaning and reassembling and the two makes one that is in great shape. Bonuses include full bearings in one chassis, various spare parts new in the bag (like original speed controls like I'll ever use them!) and a Realistic 1980's era battery charger. Oh, and a Thorne ball diff to boot! Yeah, I said it came with a fully functional, like new Thorne ball diff in one of the chassis's. Yup.... I just about crapped myself. Oh, and to top it off it also has (in new running shape) a Speedworks Monster Mash motor to boot- talk about cashing in on nostalgia performance parts....

I always wanted a Monster Beetle or Blackfoot when I was a kid. I had bought the Subaru Brat when I first started out (same chassis), but soon got tired of the RS380 and converted it over to a Frog. But I dreamed of these parts, and always wanted to have to big wheels of a "4x4" like the Monster Beetle.... I have had T-Maxxs and now have a Savage X as well as a Terra Crusher with an Axial .32 in it, but to get this simple little Monster Beetle is like a comic collector finding Superman #1 or Star Wars with the green Darth Vader at a garage sale. I don't mean to come across as bragging, but for me this is like winning the lottery and who better to share my news with than folks like you who can truly appreciate how special today turned out. And I am on vacation at home this coming week, so I am going to have fuuuuuuuun!

Thanks for listening.

Nice! Do you have any pics of your find?

I know how it is finding something cool for cheap from garage sales or thrift shops. It's an awesome feeling.

Got the selling pic, and some after my cleaning and rebuild. Even one of the ball diff- some buddies had told me it was too bad I couldn't get a Thorpe ball diff for it anymore and I disassembled and found the ball diff already installed. No body, though, but that hasn't stopped me from busting the steering servo horn - twice so far! The li'l bugger is fast and a lot of fun!

You were right, that is in good shape. Pretty sure those are original proline mashers on it.

Default RE: Got a deal - a Monster Beetle!

I have just finished drilling out the spare set of front suspension and pressing in brass pipe to make bushings. The front end has virtually no slop now- it is an idea I always wanted to try back with my Brat, but never did. I have to admit that it worked out far better than I could have hoped! Brass 3/16" pipe is a perfect fit after the slight bearing crush of pressing the pipe into the drilled out hole. For anyone that has a Brat/Frog/Monster Beetle/etc with a lot of front end slop, this is a cheap way to fix it. The pipe is about $2 from the hobby shop, then a pipe cutter (like for plumbing or automotive) and a couple of drill bits plus slip joint pliers or a vice to press in the bushings and you are in business! Be warned though.... the pipe cutter will close the opening of the pipe slightly and you will have to drill with a 5/32" bit to open it up (I did it by hand - it goes easy). The pivot bolts/pins may have a bit of a flare where the nut bottoms out, a little work with some emery cloth or a fine file will fix it.

I've got a '56 Ford pickup painted up that I did for kicks and giggles about a year ago that I'm seriously thinking of putting on it until I finally do a Beetle bod. Any opinions?

Nice looking body. I think it'd look good on your MB. What brand is it? Looks like a Parma.

Yup, it's a Parma. I just added headlights- 1/4" high intensity LED's that will run 7.2V when two in series. It's as bright as an LED flashlight now, and will just make a wiring harness that is a male and a female Deans plug so it plugs into the battery without having to wire into the car itself.

I had done up this body to try out the chrome paint from Spaz Stix, and it worked wonderfully! I have just fitted in the headlight buckets (see pics) and they are now working as well. I have the wiring going straight off the battery pack with a dongle with male and female deans (pic), so I can disconnect easily enough. And of course, I added a little switch- don't need headlights all the time!

From the look of it, all I'll need to do is fabricate a hood mount extension to fit this body on the Beetle. The side posts will fit perfectly!

Ah, she'll never look this good ever again! I finished fitting the body and peeled the protective wrap. She is done now, and will probably live on my shelf- she is just too pretty to scratch up! Although with the headlights on in the dark, it looks like some sort of Christine-esque action going on.....
