Default 4.60 tuning issues - Carb overheating?

Hey everyone.

Here's my issue. I've had my 4.60SE for quite a number of years now, but the Thunderkitten .28 just never ran the way I wanted it to run. This isn't my first nitro vehicle by any means (Almost 20 years in the hobby) and the engine was broken in properly and well-taken care off, but even in aircraft I've never had much luck with Thundertiger mills.

Knowing I was going to replace the Thundertiger with a Big Red or something similar in the near future, I pulled the truck off the shelf to see if maybe the few years of not running it worked some sort of magic, and fired it up.

Same issues I've always had with it.

Engine rapidly overheating, even when running very rich. Runs like a champ for about 1-2 minutes, and then begins to bog down on the low-end, and then a minute or so later just gives up entirely.

I've piddled around with low-end tuning to my witts end. I've reset the needles to factory and gone from there. I was reading a bit and was hearing that these engines along with many other lower-end mills on the market have uninsulated carbs and that carb overheating could be a problem.

Any suggestions on this? The low-end feels great for the first 1-2 minutes of the run, and then it just bogs down. I can richen up the low-end, same thing.

I'm definitely going to buy a new mill soon, I just want to run this one for as long as I can.

I would seal the engine, it sounds like a major air leak is making itself known after warm up. Search youtube for sealing and leak testing, it shoud fix or greatly help the problem. I wouldn't suspect carb overheating at all. The fuel has a slight cooling effect as it's drawn through the tiny orifices, and if the carb was too hot, fuel wouldboilas itgoes through the even hotter engine.

It sounds very much like an air leak to me. Seal the engine, and give it a shot again. And if it dies completely after heating up, it may also need a repinch.

Yup airleak. Seal the backplate, carb base and the HS needle. I use lucky 7 sealer from Amain hobbies, but you can use black RTV. I just like applying the lucky 7

This should solve your issue. The .28 is an awesome engine

Out of stock on that.

I'll stop by Autozone tomorrow and see if I can get some good stuff.

Thanks for the tips!

I got some black RTV from Autozone and got the engine sealed upcarb base and backplate. I've got to get the engine back in the truck and I'll probably run it this weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate it. The more I read on the TT28, people seem to love it. Hopefully I can get this one running and won't need to replace it.

+1 on sealing it,
I've been in this for 20 years too and never thought of , or had to, seal an engine.
You'd be surprised how many leaks show up on these newer RTR engines.
Keep us posted on how it goes!

i used to just throw the engine in and see how it ran first, but since I discovered lucky seven engine sealant it's been too easy to seal them first.

Yeah, that's how it was for me. I've never had to seal an engine in my entire history in the hobby..but I guess things are getting cheap, quality control goes down and more care has to be taken.

I want to thank you guys tho. Ran the truck today and I'll be honest..It's the first time I've ever been able to put a full tank thru it. Ever. And it ran great. Looks like I get to save myself $149.00! Lol.

Again, thanks for the heads up! This is going in my tips-and-tricks-to-remember book.

Good deal. Even the best engines need to be sealed sometimes, so I wouldnt entirely blame it on the RTR theory. Its just hard to make an airtight engine, and these little nitro's have to be airtight to run well. Have fun

I agree, I even seal my Noverossi's before ever running them. It's easy and in the end saves alot of time and issues
