Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Well if your reading this than you already have a mgt or you getting ready to purchase one. This thread will list everything you need to have a long lasting truck and how.
Whats difference between the 4 trucks? Theirs the mgt, mgt 4.6 se, mgt 8.0 and the mgt 3.0. The first 3 mgt's are very similar. The only difference is Transmissions, engines and radios. The original mgt had a .21 and plastic transmission. The 4.6 had a .28 and steel gears excepts the 1 and 2 speed gears. The 8.0 has a .50, All metal transmission 23mm hexes and a computerized radio. "Note" that all these trucks are interchangeable with parts. The mgt 3.0 is really a new truck but similar design and What can my Mgt do? When you bought your mgt you probably had one purpose in mind and that was to see how tough it was. Since it is a monster truck. You will find when bashing the mgt, the truck is far from the worse. There still is to this day arguments between what is the better basher, mgt or Savage. Although you might not bash that hard the truck is still competitive at a club race level at the track. A couple of changes and you can have a decent mt racer. How to make a bullet proof basher? well depending on what truck you have, you might realize your truck needs a couple of improvements on its first bash. You might notice the stopping power isnt all that great. To fix it you just need to replace the breaking spring with a peice of fuel line and it improves the stopping power a lot. You may also realize that turning inst that great. The problem is not enough juice is getting to your servo. for that you would want to take your receiver and plug the battery wire in the AUX slot. giving you an extra boost of juice:) Another alternative is to replace the 4 cell battery with a 5 cell 6v hump pack. so you have a constant 6v. Preferably something like this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXHUJ3&P=7 Now the durability issues. You might find if you take your stock truck off a 20 ft jump you might blow out your shock caps. The simple fix for this is not new shocks cause that can get expensive, but to buy FT shock caps. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXWL86&P=0 If you want matching shocks than you can get the Ft shock bodies, but there not necessary. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXTZL1&P=Z Next if your a hard basher you may break an A-arm or steering knuckle. I never did but still if you do, you might thing these arms arnt very tough. So upgrade to RPM parts. Rpm are truely the toughest thing your can do to your mgt, plus they're guaranteed for life if you do break them. http://www.rpmrcproducts.com/product...c/AssocMGT.htm If you have the original mgt or the 4.6 you might find the tranny slipping when you give it gas or just acting up. The usual problem is mainly the one way bearing going out or a pin snapped in there. There are a few ways to fix this. First you can just buy a whole new tranny and wait for to happen again. Second you can buy the parts to repair it and install a forward only conversion. This elimnates a lot of weight in the transmission and eliminates reverse which causes the main problem. Yes you will have to learn how not to use reverse but its worth it in the long run. The other option is to upgrade to the 8.0 tranny. I have yet to hear about any slippage problems with the 8.0 but associated is taking there sweet time in making a Foc for this truck. One last major upgrade is shimming the diffs. The stock diffs come from the factory with to much play and driven enough with shred your diffs. Pm to know how. How to make it a racing truck? The mgt although a great basher is very capable around the track. In order to this you need some modifications. Tires you will need to change your stock tires to racing tires, say bowties or crime fighters. You might want to upgrade your servo with something faster and more torqy like a hitec servo or airtronics. If your racing with the .21 or the 4.6 you migt want to upgrade your engine. The LRP spec III seems to be the most chose engine for this truck. As of others such as the axial .28, sts 30, and the mach 427 is a great choice cause of fuel economy and can be had cheap of some sites like ebay or finedesignrc.com Also you might want to get rid of the stock pipe and throw on the side exhaust with a after marked pipe such as the lst2 pipe. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFVB4&P=7 Another improvement you might want is a new controller. When racing you might want to upgrade to a crystal less controller. such as spectrum, futaba or airtronics. Then again you migt be able to stick with the Am controller since nobody at the tracks run them and you might be okay. . What tires will fit on my mgt? The stock tires are okay but you might want something else. unfortunately the stock hexes are 14mm and not 17 but luckily the tmaxx uses the same size which gives you a lot of options. If you want to keep the 14mm you can buy max size wheels and put what ever tire you want on there as long as its for maxx size now the problem with 14mm is if you upgrade your engine to more power the small hexes are going to work loose and shred the inside of your tires. That why people upgrade to 17 and 23 mm wheels. In order to run 17 you will mostly need a 17mm adapter for a 6mm axle. for me these work great. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXNWR8&P=ML If you would like to know how to run truggy and buggy adapters pm me. For the 23mm you will need these http://www.dacemfg.com/Page.cfm?Cate...D=2293&Search= they go on your 14 mm hex so theirs really no stripping. As for tires. The best all around tires are big joes, moabs and badlands. . Wheres the best place to buy parts? [b]Well i Personally think if you just need one part in a quick hurry than the best place is the lhs but if your lhs dosnt have any than tower hobbies is the place to go. Also Amain hobbies is suppose to have better options with shipping charges, so they're good also. They're really easy to use and stock every part and a lot of hopups. But if your looking to buy spares in bulk. You cant beat the ebay chop shops. you can get 8 A arms for the price of 2 at tower. And a tranny or an engine can be had on there for half the retail price. More to come. |

Izzis da forum for SNAUTY MODS?:D:);)
Sorry, couldn't resist. ^^Good info in post #1. |
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
you said... for that you would want to take your receiver and plug the battery wire in the AUX slot. giving you an extra boost of juice
How does that work? I don't see how that gives extra power. |

RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Nice explanation. Do you know if the MGT 3.0 is the same?
|
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
ORIGINAL: Snaut Rocket Also know that racing is a lot tougher on the parts than bashing. In racing, if you can drive for crap, you spend a great deal more time on-throttle and at-speed than bashing. You push the durability of your components by sheer mileage rather than strength. Case-in-point: I can run stock a-arms and suspension pins on a track and them last until they wear out...for bashing, I'm running RPM a-arms with titanium suspension pins and STILL managed to break an a-arm and pretzel a suspension pin. In bashing, you impart a GALACTIC amount more stress on your components launching it 8 ft in the air at 35+ MPH. That's me, at least. One bad landing from a jump like that would equate to a DAY driving on a race track. As I said, unless you can't hit the double, don't slow down, and spend your day lawn-darting your truck into the backside of every ramp on the track. Then you DESERVE to break more parts racing than bashing. Of course, then your not racing either. More like "Bracing". Or "Rashing". You like that? Just came up with it. Good information, though. I'll tell my Dad and Bro about the fuel line thing to tighten up the brakes. The stock setup truly sucks. |
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
And guys if you have any info on the mgt 3.0 you can give me please do, since i have no experience with them and will ad it in there.
thanks.:D Sticky anyone[8D] |
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Nice job Snauty! Very informative.
|
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
The Mgt transmission is a option part, per towerhobbies. Also I belive the Mgt and Mini use the same servos.
|
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
For any Canadians out there who buy from American Hobby shops I would say not to buy from towerhobbies. They charge quite a bit on duties, customs, shipping, etc. A-Main Hobbies IMO is much better. No duties, very cheap shipping and just like tower they have a wide selection of parts. I find Canadian hobby shops to be very expensive right now.

thanks i added it in their.

RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Nice OP SR! I just bought a 8.0 the other day. The box was factory sealed when I got it but there was no manuals included. No biggie, I just downloaded them from AE's site. After reading the manuals there's still one thing I need to know that didn't seem to be covered. The computer radio that came with it has; Model, D/R,EPA,ARC,Sub trim and REV functions. What is ARC?
|
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
IIRC, "ARC" is exponential. You would use it to soften the response around center, like if your brakes are too grabby or turn-in is too aggressive, or to do the opposite if you want more response to light inputs. The same radio comes with the RC8, and on that car it comes in handy because the steering is very aggressive.
|
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Thanks for the comeback Buzz. I kinda fiqured it must have been something like expo, just couldn't make ARC mean anything to me. Adjustable rate control? Eh... whatever!
|
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Yeah, who knows why the heck they chose "ARC"? Adjustable Response Control maybe? Does it seem to be working for you like I described, though?
|
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Well I.m still doing break-in and haven't messed with that function yet. Being a backyard enthusiast (hate the term basher) I never mess with expo anyway.
Something I discovered that I'm sure other owners already know...I was a little disappointed with the idea that I'd have to take the body off to fuel it or start it. After doing that a couple of times I began to wonder why the front body mount was loose and the rear one tight? Then the lightbulb in my head lit up! OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!! Now i see why the rear clip is designed that way! You just lift the rear of the body up and you can get to anything easily and quickly. Very clever. I assume the older models had this nice feature too? |

RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Oh...thats a bummer[:o]. I'm an older guy who grew tired of beating the snot out of my stuff so maybe I'll be able to keep it together for awhile. I guess if it gets busted up I can just make 2 more holes and clip it down. Still beats pulling 4 clips.
Has anyone installed the optional header & pipe? I assume the header allows access to the roto-start? Only ran 2 tanks so far...that was about a week ago, weather been too cold for breaking-in. But today is supposed to 55F and tomorrow 65F! Will try to get her up to full scream:D! |
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
I ain't no young 'un either;)(well, at least compared to most on the car section), but this truck just begs to be driven stupidly because you can get away with so much without damage. Actually, I just remove that plastic plate and replace the whole shebang with a regular body clip when it gets too beat up. It really doesn't seem to take much before the stock clip is toast.
As far as the FT side header, yes it allows access to the roto-start. You can also use the tuned-pipe/header combo from the LST, but you will have to grind the flange on the bottom to clear the pullstart housing, and bend the header a bit if you want it to fit inside the plastic mudguard. I just removed the mudguard on mine. |
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Yeah, I thought about my "tired of beating the snot out of " statement as being a broad brush comment. No doubt I'll subject it to tests of it's limits(beat the snot out it;)).
Good to hear about the header clearance. If the engine impresses me I'll likely do that upgrade first. I almost didn't by the truck because it was RTR[:'(]. But I was itchin' for a new MT and I've known about the MGT for years but never seen one IRL. I heard good things about them...so there you go...and I'm happy with it so far. Just pushed past 50F so I'm heading out to have some fun! |
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
Well yesterday didn't go well.
Started up the 8.0 with no difficulty. Drove about 20 feet and it shut off. Starts right back up real easy but shuts off the second the glow stick is removed. Repeated this a few times and realise it's time for a new glowplug. Now it's running on it's own but as it warms up it seems to be leaning out and gaining RPM's. Shut down and tried again this time slightly squeezing the primer bulb which caused a fairly decent idle. At this time I noticed the pressure line to the fuel tank was FULL of what I thought was fuel but turned out to be oil! Further investigation revieled the tube was shoved clear to the bottom of the muffler allowing oil to be pushed into the tank. Put 2&2 together and decided the carb must be clogged. Pulled the carb, took it apart, blew it out with compressed air, re-assembed it and sealed the carb to engine with a dab of ultra black. Went to fire it up to see if I fixed it and the carb wouldn't take any fuel at all!!! Hahaha...man o man...some days[sm=bananahead.gif]! At that point I decided to call it a day. Time for some cold ones! I think it's a simple matter of a mis-adjusted low speed needle. I set that needle while the throttle barrel was apart from the body. We'll see! |
RE: Every thing you need to know about the mgt
[sm=thumbs_up.gif] Nice job Snauty. Now lets see some Snauty mods! Bout' time the MGTs got there own thread..... now Ill visit more often.

Nice job snauty!
There's a lot of MGT mods soon to be added! I commend you for getting this started and hope we can keep it friendly. I have compiled a lot of info and tips, not all my own most have been found on other forums. I hope to add it when we get stickied. Maybe we can get some sub forums started. Hey snauty good job.;) |
