The Edge is very stable in Harrers. More so than the Extra or Suk. To be honst, its been so long sonce I've flown one of our Caps I cant remember how it compares. However the Edge will get very nose high w/o a lot of wing rock.

Mike, is the distance from the firewall and the pre-drilled blind nuts for mounting the engine the same on the edge as the cap? I ask because chief makes a nice engine mount/adapter for the bme engines that use the pre-installed blind nuts for the gt 80. Thanks!

Default RE: 33% Edge release?

I installed the DA-100 in my Edge this past w/e so I thought I'd give you guys a quick update. BTW, I meant "I just Love DA engines" a few posts up, not live. I cant type.

To mount the DA-100 you need 1-3/4 standoffs from the firewall. No big deal. I added 1/4" ply squares to the firewall and then used the 1-1/2" standoffs I'd used w/ the ZDZ 80 on my Extra. Easy installation.

Since I was replacing the ZDZ 80, I removed the 1 pond of lead at the firewall, and moved the rx and ign batteries back from the firewall to the middle of the fuse.

The cowl is a bit narrow for the 100 and it is necessary to make cutouts in both sides of the cowl for the spark plugs and caps.

I'm using a Mej 25 x 12 3-blade. Believe it or not, this is my first experience with a DA 100. (lots with DA 150s). What a sweet "little" engine. Fueled it up (using Ashless oil for break-in), choked it a few flips, and started it right up. Didnt need to touch the needles.

As I,ve mentioned in the past, if using a large engine for a model like a 100cc in our 33% H9 models, USE THROTTlE management. Thi s is a lot of power and it seems it could easily overstress the plane if you let it. However what a LOT of power.

The thing does some 3D "things" I'm not sure I can quite identify just yet. I had a ball flying it, and flew it a lot yesterday. It is quite a fun set-up

I'll have it at the DOGS show this weekend in Dayton OH. If any of you are there, come up and say hi. If you'd like to fly the Edge, let me know, I'll be happy to pass the box.

BTW, the timing is great, we will start to ship them this week!

Hi Mike,

I've got the Edge on order here in the UK, do you know if they are due over here anytime soon too ?

Also, in the manual you mention drilling 8 5/16" holes in the baffle plates in the mufflers of the GT80 for an extra 300rpm.
I got my engine today and that seems really tight in there ? Is the extra 300rpm something I'm really likely to need ?

Thanks,

Marcus

Some Edge shiped out to hobby shops on Tuesday. Not sure when we'll ship to the UK yet.

Yes, the Extra 300RPM is needed with the GT 80.

I am waiting for my Edge 540 33%, I am planning to use a BME110 extreme engine. Do you know if they make an adapter that fits the predrilled firewall holes for this engine I can buy. If not, I'll have to build my own standoffs. Thanks

The edges arrived today at my hobby shop, going to go pick one up monday and start on it, bme 110 as well. According to MM, the bolt pattern and length is identical to the cap, and chief makes an adapter for the cap so going to give it a try. Hopefully I can get the plane 20.5lbs-21.5lbs. The 110 should pull it ok. I can say the kits are very nice, the paint and covering was flawless, and like the carbon fiber landing gear.

Mike,

Can you just confirm if the 8, 5/16" holes in the baffle plates of the GT-80 mufflers are in each muffler, or do you mean 8 holes total, 4 in each muffler. It looks really tight to squeeze 8 holes and I may cut the mufflers open and after drilling the holes, tig them back together.

Also the manual, doesn't mention sealing the rudder hinge gap, as per the Aileron's and Elevators, I guess I should go ahead and seal the rudder hinge gap too ?

Sorry to bother you with these little details but this is my first large scale aircraft and I want to do things properly.

Thanks,

Marcus

Hey Mike, Thanks for letting me fly your Edge at the D.O.G.S.!! That DA100 was insane. Also thanks for flying my Sukhoi. It was really nice to see it get rung out by someone that knows how to. I told my plane that it was me flying it, shhh but I think it knows better!

I had alot of fun this weekend and I will be back next year.

Thanks agian Mike,
Kelly

Mike, picked up my edge today, looks good. Do you think one 8611 in the tail on a push/pull is plenty? or any stress on the rudder with just one side pushing and pulling?

On the GT 80 mufflers, I drilled 8 holes in each muffler. The ojject is to get rig of as much of the bafle plate as you can, it is very restrictive. If you can weld them back together, then the best thing to do is to cut them apart and remove the bafflke plate.

I believe the 3W 75 will pull the Edge well. I've seen one in a Suk that worked great.

Great, thanks very much for the help Mike.

I guess there will be a little cutting, grinding and welding at work tomorrow!

Mike, the manual states the cg should be between 6.0-6.75" back. Where do you have yours at and is the manual accurate after flying yours? Also, are you using a 1.25 or 1.5" servo arm on the rudder? Are the pro links recommended in the manual the correct size, ie 2.5" for elevators, 4.5" for ailerons, and 1 5" for the rudder?

I guess my curiousity is..... If it is designed around around the Zenoah80, why is he flying it with the DA100? Does the Zenoah not produce the thrust that this plane needs?

Because HorizonHobby carries the Zenoah line of engines and not DA.

When was the last time you saw a serious IMAC/3D competitor (ok let me rephrase ANY competitor) use a Zenoah engine?

I have nothing against Zenoah engines, in fact the ones I see seem to be just the ticket for the plane they are in, but you rarely see them in 1/3 scale unlimited aerobatic planes because they are heavy for their power.

Doesn't bother me tho, most people take engine recommendations with a grain of salt anyway.

Default RE: 33% Edge release?

Well that is sorta my point.... Why not design a plane around what people are going to use in it..... The H9 ARF seem to be getting ZDZ80s or DA 100s or BMEs in them.... not ZENOAHs.... I know it is all about the marketing of ZENOAH engine due to the fact that that is what HORIZON distributes, but HORIZON needs to be realistic about this. How many Zenoahs have been sold based on the recommendation? Most that have used Zenoahs (which is very few), would have used them anyway.

If H9 wants to one up the rest of the ARF market, they need to design a 1/3 scale aerobat around the BME110. Not that the 110 is the most powerful, but it is very competitive in power and then there is the fact that it is soooooo much lighter than the rest.
