a doubt while taking the temp of my engine...
Hello guys, OS 37....
My engine has 1.25turns out in the main needle. I measure the temperature in different points during flight, flying IDLE 1, it shows always about 190F on the head (next to the glow plug), no more, I have read in different posts that up to 210 is ok. However, I can't leave my fingers more than 2secs on the backplate and I remember there is a rule of 3 seconds at least. Should I rich it out? The engine has an amazing power, but I am afraid it might be running a bit lean Do you think guys my infrared temp gauge does not work properly? I have the blue DURATRAX flash gun..... |

If you know how to auto take it up after its warmed up and hit throttle hold. If it rat tat tats on the way down before it settles to an idle then its probably too lean.
The 37 is hard to take a finger reading because of the webbed backplate. If you keep it under 210 to 220 in flight I wouldn't sweat it. |

thanks barracuda, I am going to borrow somebody's temp gauge next time just to double check that mine works properly and it is really running under 200F, if it does I'll leave it like that then, but I'll be checking periodically just in case....

I went to the field last weekend and I just got more confused....
The heli guys asked me to CHECK THE TEMP on the backplate (with my infrared gauge temp) and said it should not surpass 150F which I find more confusing because according with that I have read in several forums, I should check the temperature next to the glowplug (heat sink) and it should not surpass 210F...... :eek: I was taking the temp from the backplate and I was getting 170F (190F on the head) and EVERYBODY (about 4 heli guys) said IT WAS TOOOOOOOOOOO HOT..... what do you think???? |

Actually the best place to shoot it is on the back of the motor where the heat sink head meets the crank case.
190F on the head isn't too hot. |
