You need a return path for the current. Current flows through the center pin on the adapter to the center pin on the glow plug, though the element in the glow plug to the outside of the glow plug and then to the body of the engine. You need a path back to the other side if the battery in the ignitor.
There was another thread on here where someone could not figure out why theirs wasn't working. They did not have the return wire.

are these the same things you can use for getting your engine to run more reliably when inverted? or just for making access to the plug through a cowl easier? what do you use when you engine runs poorly upside down? i've never mounted one upside down, but i'm looking to buy a P-40 soon for winter building and half the next century, and am going to mount the engine inverted and heard the glow motors are kind of finicky inverted.

No, The units shown in this thread are used to provide an alternate location for attacheing the glow driver when starting the plane. They are used when a glow plug is concealed in a cowel, or is hard to reach, or when the user wants to stay farther from the prop.
The item you are talking about is called a glow driver. They connect to a battery and can be controlled by your radio to power the glow plug in flight. You will get various opinions on here regarding glow drivers. There are a lot of people that use them, and love them while others say they are unecessary if you know how to properly tune your engine. Me personally I can see both sides of the argument, but have never used a glow driver. I have however used the remote adapters on a couple of planes for ease of use as well as safety puropses and liked them very much.

Why just "almost" installed it? I just ordered 2 from Hobby People and cant wait to get them. I have2 4 strokes mounted inverted and I am tired of attaching the glow starter underneath.
Nevermind the question. I followed your link....

Here you go. The rectangular part to which I think you are referring to is the female plug. Nothing sticks out on the plane. All you do is attatch the igniter to the extention that has like a stereo headphone male plug- and plug it in on the side of the cowl. Start the plane and unplug.
You can see me unplug the remote glow in this video:

Ya want a cheap head lock? Solder your wire to a wheel collar. Works great.....................You can solder, can't you?
