Default Write-up: Installing a Bowman ring in a DLE-20

Last last year I ordered a Bowman ring for my the DLE-20 on my Pulse 125. When I ordered the ring I told Frank Bowman I'd take pictures and do a write-up - so here it is!

- - -

Note that you can do this with the engine in the airplane, but for the reed valve mod which followed it had to be removed.

1. Remove the spinner and propeller

2. Remove the cowl
3. Remove the muffler
4. Remove the throttle and choke linkages

5. Remove the engine from the plane

6. Remove the cylinder head bolts

7. Separate the cylinder head from the crankcase

At this point I took a close look at the stock ring. It was loose in the groove and easily moved and it was almost ready to fall out.

8. Remove the stock ring - start at one end and work it over the top of the piston.

9. Roll the Bowman ring around the groove to ensure there's no binding. If there is, clean the groove with a piece of the old ring or a wire brush.*

10. Sand the piston sides lightly with some 600-grit Emery cloth.*

11. With the notches facing up, work the Bowman ring into the groove on one side of the pin.

12. Work the ring around the piston until it's all in the groove.

*per Frank Bowman's instructions

13. Work the cylinder head back over the piston
14. Put some thread lock on the cylinder head bolts

15. Reinstall the cylinder bolts.

At this point you could reinstall the engine in the airplane, but I still had to do the reed valve mod. Write-up and link to follow.

Great write up grosbeak. I have his rings in all my engines.
I have a question, did you put any oil on the ring and cylinder wall prior to instalation.
