Use the same fluid that put the gunk there, namely fuel. Use that and an acid brush as a wash, it should all come off.

Use Dawn Power Dissolver. It is made for cleaning pots and pans with baked on residue. I used to buy it in the grocery department of my local Wall Mart. I have also found it in Home Depot under a different name, Dawn Grill Cleaner, intended for BBQ grill cleaning. It is exactly the same product just marketed for a little different use. Spray it on and let it soak for 4-5 mins, scrub with an old tooth brush, rinse with warm water and dry it off with compressed air. Of course you want to seal off and plug all openings to keep the cleaner and rinse water out of the inside of the engine. I clean them in my kitchen sink and rinse them with the spray hose (when my wife's not looking).
