Looking for suggestions on what paint to use and what steps to take in painting my aluminum landing gear.
Thanks

The first thing you want to do is to clean it with water and a scotchbrite pad (or other nylon scouring pad) until you get what is called a "Water break free" surface. What that means is, when you wet it with water, the water will coat the metal as a sheet (as opposed to breaking up into beads) and will stay that way for a few seconds. If you see the water pull away from any part of the aluminum consistantly, scrub a little more. Then prime and paint with whatever you want (as long as it's fuel-proof of course)

Hey, thanks for your help really appreciate it. Would you suggest any particular paint, epoxy type, lacquer, etc?

Personally, I like 21st century paint. But that's one of those areas where everyone will have a different opinion.

I have had VERY good luck using the rattle can paint from Top Flite - the LustreCoat stuff. Clean the gear with alcohol to get the oils off it, steel wool or sand it a bit, then get ready to paint by washing down in soap and water.

I put on their primer first, then follow with color. I have a few gear sets done this way and all are excellent.

Cheech, thanks for the suggestion.
I notice that you live in suburban Chicago, I used to fly at Shoe Factory Rd and Rte 59, when we lived in the area.

Have you considered the polished look? I've taken all mine to a buffing wheel, and it usually comes out mirror like finish. Very shiney. Just a thought here. I was tempted to paint mine this time, and needed to clean them up anyways, so again, I took them to the buffer. I shined them up, tried them on the plane to see how they look.....decided not to paint. hehe.
