Default 5 mm bolt replacement

5 mm bolts are an exact match with 10-32 machine screws which are much easier to find .

Default close

The threads are NOT an exact match, but they are close. If changing from one to the other, it would be a good idea to run a tap down the hole.

Default 5 mm bolt replacement

Fun' is right. I have a 5mm bolt on my Slimline muffler and I was trying to put a pressure nipple in it. I got a 10-32 and although it screwed right in, it's a little smaller (wiggles around a bit). I used some gasket sealer to fill it in a bit. We'll see.

If you wax the bolt & brush it clean J-B epoxy will take up the slack better the wax will keep the bolt removable--good for 300 f or so

Default Metric bolts & nuts

I have been obtaining small metric nuts and bolts via the railroad modelers. These are rather common with them as much of their fine stuff is made in the Orient, and Germany.

Northwest Shortline out of Portland makes replacement bolts and nuts, and markets them in some green and yellow cello-pack. On occasion, they market the small taps and dies too.

I needed a slightly longer 4mm screw to use on an electric motor mount, and they had numerous lengths available at like 50 cents per box.

I've got a really good local hardware store which carries a lot of metric stuff. I find their selection much better than HD or Lowe's.

If you are looking for supplies in metric - try callling some of the family owned hardware stores you find in the phone book. You may be surprised.

Yup, I tried the local hardware (Marshall's) store. They had EVERYTHING... except a 5mm pressure nipple.

Oh well. I have not had a chance to test it yet. Thanks for the tip on the wax and JB weld.

Give Pacific Fasteners in Burnaby a call. They probably have what you need.
