Default Tuesday Weld

I was adding shock absorbing struts to the wire lg legs of my Kaos. (My landings are alot like a carrier landing so shock absorption is a + for me) The struts are secured by 2 set screws that thread through an aluminum insert and lock the assembly to the leg. Well, the steel in the set screws is ALOT harder than the aluminum and when I torked the screws tight, they stripped the aluminum thread.[sm=angry.gif]
After exhausting my store of suitable expletives [:@] I wondered how to make it right. I remembered a product that is suitable for many tasks, J.B. Weld. I cleaned the screw threads with acetone to remove all traces of oil and mixed a small batch. It mixes like epoxy. I used atoothpick to fill the holes with the mix, making sure that it filled all of the cavity.
Long story short (too late for that) , when it cured I drilled a pilot hole through the weld, drilled a hole for the 6/32 set screw and threaded it. Presto it worked. It has held up under my impact tests and shows no signs of weakening.
Oh, one more thing, about the subject, it happened on a Tuesday.
Well that's it. Happy landings, Tony .

Default RE: Tuesday Weld

JB Weld is good for many many RC applacations. I have done similar things with it myself. It is not good for extreme heat though like engine exhaust or head bolts. I just used it today to hold some nuts in place so I can remove the screw without having the nut drop off to someplace I can't get to inside the plane.
