Default Drilling CF props

Is the process the same as for wooden props? I acquired my first $70 CF Xoar 22x10 and don't want to muck it up.

Hi,

Yes with qualifications. The swarf and dust from CF is nasty and will cause cancer in Californian lab rats and at the least result in "mega itchies" in humans . I would strongly suggest that you wear PPE (at the minimum a particle mask) and do the job outside on a windy day, (with the wind at your back), to disperse the nasties. When I cut or drill CF I do so with hand tools if possible with water running over the job. If this isn't a viable option at least set up your shop vac to suck up the particles as you go and do the work outside.

Cheers,

Colin

Thanks for the info on drilling CF Props. I haven't drilled one yet but will soon. I might have just gone on and done it like I do my other props had I not read your post. Thanks again for the heads up on this. I learn something new and of value all the time from you guys on RCU. Tony.

I use a drill press for all props of any size, especially my bigger props. drill slowly with a sharp bit or a reamer, and keep a windex etc. spray bottle handy and mist the prop as you work on it... that will keep the dust, etc. out of the air and in one local making it easier to clean up. If you use a vacuum make sure no dust is excaping or it will really disperse it in the area. I have a certified HEPA filter on mine but you can try vacuuming up some flour and then shining a flashlight or better yet, a laser pointer in the room with lights out to see if flour got thru the filter.
Good luck and good flying.
