monokote

hi,

Repairing a "Ugly Stick" ARF. Any suggestions on monokoting the "scalloped" trailing edge of the ailerons? can't seem to figure out a way that looks decent never mind good.

thanks,
bob S

You could try sealing the monokote down all the way out to the scalloped edges and then with an xacto knife you could carefully cut reliefe cuts around the arc of the scalop. That way you could fold down individual tabs of covering and Iron them down one by one instead of trying to shrink the covering down in one piece through the scallops.

Cut a strip of covering about 1/4" wider than the thickness of the edge of the aileron, and at least 6" longer than the aileron. Start at one end and tack it down. Work it one scallop at a time and cut the covering as needed to get it to lay down. The second strip should be big enough to cover both top and bottom as well as hinge line. Do one side, then trim the excess out of the scallops and iron down the edge you just trimmed, then wrap it around and do the other side. Trim excess as needed - use a SHARP blade! Iron all the edges well before you use a heat gun (which may not be needed at all).

Trent's got it. I've done several WWI models that way. One tip: when pulling the 'cote around any curve use a lot of heat pull hard and let the area cool before moving to the ext area and expect a of of waste.
