RE: Balsarite use and tips
As a former paint manufacturer, I suggest that anyone contemplating the use of MEK, exercise extreme caution. The chemical has a low flash point, and go go off very easily.

RE: Balsarite use and tips
We stopped allowing the use of MEK on Boeing aircraft in every hanger I have been in since sometime in the 90's due to its high flash point. Except the last hanger I worked at. It was on a US Army base. Imeant LOW flash point. Sorry.

ORIGINAL: sebo I get stuff from places like China and don't have to pay a fee....Do you think you can order from them? What If I sent you the stuff as from one modeler to another....let's say, a birthday present or some such thing? Jacksonville, Florida, USA to you? The smaller the item and easier for Postal services to handle as mail - the more likely you are to get it thru without charges - unless there is an insurance/value type slip pasted on pkge. Some stuff I get from China etc usually comes thru without charge but the reason for that is that the sender puts on a very low value which I think reflects the actual cost - to the shop - and not the retail cost to us. Also, I dont get big expensive orders - keeps valu low John |

MEK will go off at temps well below 100F. |

Guys, be very careful sending flammable products either Domestic or across borders. I personally know of a very famous dealer/show producer that ignores all shipping recommendations. With all the security precautions and fines in place now days, I would not want to be caught sending a flammable via USPS or UPS. The first tier if fines is $10,000. Pretty steep to just send a can of Balsarite. They are x-raying cargo shipments now and being very suspicious of international shipments. Just be careful!

RE: Balsarite use and tips
I would love to get Balsarite again. But in Kalifornia, it has bad things in it so it is not on the shelf any more. I tried to order it and they would not send it to Kalifornia.
Reasons to use Balsarite, depnds on the type of Balsarite you are using. One formula is water thin and is used for the film type coverings. It makes it stick so much better. Especially on the sheeted areas. Not so much on the the ribs. The thicker formula is for coverings that have no glue on them. I have used it with dress silk. It worked. It was pretty thick and went on with a stiff bristle brush. It fuel proofs for glow fuel. I have found my covering jobs have less bubbles, stick better compared to not using it. Use it or not, your choice. Buzz. |
