Paint Questions

Guys:
I am going to paint some fiberglass, plastic pieces and some canopy detail. I am going to sand the pieces lightly thenprime with rustoleum sandable primer. I have covered my airplane with Monokote Metallic red and Ultracote white. So most of the pieces being painted are going to be metallic red on the bottom and gloss white on top.

Questions.

1. The metallic red that I bought which is close to the monokote is from Testers and it is Lacquer. (my airplane is gasoline powered) Will this paint crack)

2. Should I wet sand the primer before applying the paint?

3. What are your suggestions as far as the lacquer? Should I try to find an enamal or urethane that matches? Do you know where I can get a better quality paint?

4. What type of paint is suited for model airplane use?

I am not worried about the gloss white as I can find it anywhere.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance for you help

Regards
Glenn Williams

RE: Paint Questions

First rule of painting: Many paints don't play well with each other. For example, you can put enamel on top of lacquer, but you can NOT put lacquer on top of enamel. So make sure that your primer can handle a lacquer top coat.

Since you are using gas, your best bet is to use automotive paint. If you bring a swatch of covering to an automotive paint store, they can match it exactly

RE: Paint Questions

I would rethink using testors on anything but small pieces that are nowhere near fuel.  I've used the OD Green with bad results.  It's not that durable.

RE: Paint Questions

" I am going to paint some fiberglass, "

Wash well with warm soapy water. Most of the commercial parts use a mold release that can cause problems, when trying to paint over it.
