Workshop
I noticed the thread for trailers, so I thought I would start one with work shops/benches (plus I am always looking for ideas.)
So, if anyone has any ideas or pictures they would like to show off, go ahead. jh313 |
RE: Workshop
I don't care how many of these threads come up. I will always show off my workshop!

RE: Workshop
Okay Mr. Showoff that's a really nice workshop, and how many times a day do you do a clean up. Is that part of a full scale tail section on the bench ??

RE: Workshop
Lol, if I didn't keep it clean I would never find anything! :)
Yes, that is the empennage of an RV-7 kit that has unfortunately not been touched in almost a year. I will get back to it, but I had a Sig 1/5 Cub that I ... needed ... to build. And heck yes, I am showing off! You're just jealous [&:] :D Please, someone else post pics of their shop- I know you're out there! |
RE: Workshop
You are close but not right so no cookie for you, as I am not jealous, but rather just wish that I had something like yours ;)

RE: Workshop
One thing I use is a dremol, does anyone have any interesting ideas on storing it to keep it in easy access (and don't say in the case :)? Also, I am looking to build a kit, what do you guys use to pin the plans to? Any ideas would be great.
Thanks jh313 |
RE: Workshop
I keep mine in it's case but my buddy keeps his plugged in and hanging by a cup hook on the wall in his workshop within easy reach above his workbench.

RE: Workshop
That's a good idea. My problem is the bench is like an island in the middle of the garage with storage along the walls. With the bench where it is I can't hang things near by, so I'm always looking for ideas.

JH313, heres what i have done, I bought a shelf at Lowes that has a laminate on all sides & is 48" long. I taped down a piece of drywall to it. I lay my plans on it & cover them with wax paper. I have built dozens of SMALL planes this way in the house. In the garage, i use a larger piece of drywall on an oak table top......Gene

I've shown this in other threads but, here's another garage conversion. Started out with an empty garage. The build table is a 4 x 8 torsion box topped with 16 guage cold rolled steel setting on a base made from two heavy duty shelf units set at half hight. The cabinets were made from MDF for the carcas, poplar for the face frames, Birch ply for the door frames and panels and drawer fronts. The tops were also MDF covered with formica. Added heat and A/C, and 4 new elecrical circuits. I get lots of light from the 6 4' dual tube high output florecent lights. The floor is covered with foam tiles. One of the latest additions was a CNC machine. I'm currently using it to build a balsa storage bin.

Gene...
Your workshop doesn't even come in at a CLOSE second to mine, in regards of being the Extreme Opposite of a Clean Workshop.. Quite often I am using a chair as my workbench.. Craig.. Hmmm, maybe I'll clean it this evening... Ahh, what the heck, It can wait till this weekend.... Why do today what you can put off till tomorrow!!! Hmm, Seems that the Pics didn't upload.. I will try again later, I think RCU is having some issues right now!! |

RE: Workshop
I use a big sheet of the pink rigid foam insulation that you can get at the home store. Place it on my workbench and off we go... :)

RE: Workshop
For outlets in an island table, I have a couple of overhead quad outlet boxes over my islands. When I need power, I have a few extension boxes with 4 foot cords that I plug in overhead when I need power. With this approach, I can unplug and move them out of the way when not in use.
Dope Fiend - There used to be a HS teacher at Mundelein HS that completed several homebuilts with students. I have to assume you guys are acquainted. PS, I have an RV-6 empennage....stab, vertical fin, rudder and one elevator complete. One elevator to go. I would like to unload it. Maybe someone doesn't want to build an RV-6, but it would make a great learning tool for someone interested in building a monococque airframe! |
RE: Workshop
Mike- nope, I went to high school back East, lol.
Why have you given up on your RV-6? |
RE: Workshop
Dope Fiend - I'm sure you have heard the story before. An RV-6 seemed like a good idea at the time, but life responsibilities got in the way. I just don't have the time or inclination to jump on that again. R/C Satisfies my aviation needs now. When we lived in Crystal Lake IL, I was very active in EAA Chapter 790 out of Barrington. We had a chapter campout at Oshlosh every year. I also had a couple of partners in a Bonanza which was an amazing airplane to fly. Definitely nicer than any other I had flown before. It was fun, but my interests have shifted. Having a 4 place bird at my disposal definitely put the RV-6 on the back burner.

I picked up a manicurists pole. It came with a magnifying glass on an adjustable arm. I also added a flex extension to it too.
