Removing excess glue from CA hinge
 

Hello all,
I've installed my CA hinge for the first time and the control surface is not deflecting as far as it did before I glued it. I'm sure I did was to use to much glue and it built up on the hinge line. How can I remove this excess glue? may nail polish remover, acetone, I'm thinking this. The big question is after removing it with some type of solution will it ruin the integrity of the hinge.

Just flex it a bit, and it will loosen up. If you put acetone on it you will weaken the bond with the wood and will be likely to cause the hinge to fail later. CA hinges are a great resource for us, but they are a one shot deal. There is no fixing them once they glue is applied, so if something it wrong all you can do is cut it off and make a new slot.

PAT, WE have all done that at one time or another. Some times just working the control service , it will break loose. Depending on the glue used ??. And what type hinge ??. If using a c/a type hinge, best to cut center, and start again. If using a hinge that as a center pin , like dubro pull center pin out. and clean it up. What I do in connecting control surface 's together , I use a silicone tubing . after the glue dryes , cut tubing only. BINGO it work's for me HANK FLEET builder & STINSON FLYER.

If, before you install the hinge, you draw a line with a piece of candle where you want it to bend, the ca will not go there. Next time.

CA hinges are very forgiving. I have messed up the installation of CA hinges just about every way imaginable and I have never had one fail. Yours will loosen up with use. The only other option I know of is to cut the hinges and install new ones at different locations, but that is rarely necessary.

The way I solve that problem is to use a crayon of the same color as the surface and draw a line in the center of hinge with the hinge line on both sides. That seems to work for me. If the glue does attach to the hinge you can flex the surface to break it free. Logair
