building board

What do you folks use for a covering on the building board. I'm not happy with ceiling tile and they no longer make the stuff we used way back when!!! Need something that will hold the pins in position, any ideas? Thanks, Dave

I use homasote. I got mine in a 4X8' sheet from Menards.

Sheetrock holds pins good, and is good for cutting wood on with a razor.

Sheetrock has always worked for me. Usually after a build or two I can turn it over and use it again.

I still use a old favorite...a hollow core door...over the workbench. Accepts pins easily but not too easily.

Thanks for the tips, I found homasote using a web search. Bought a sheet and it works great, different from the stuff I bought in the 80's, but will be just fine. If anyone else is shopping neither Lowes nor Home Depot carry it and we don't have a Menards in the area. Currently in FL, a snowbird and love it! Dave

You were probably using Celotex back in the 80s. Mine finally wore out and when I couldn't find it, I made the switch to homasote.

I couldn't find homasote at Lowes and Home Depot, either.

Try asking for sound board at the Home depot sku 532-811. Tey sell it in my store.

Homasote makes a great surface for my 6' X 16' HO scale slot racing table that my grandkids race on! I will have to try a piece for building.

I use 2" styrofoam that is used in the walls of a house to insulate.

As stated, Menards has homasote.

I switched to a magnetic building board ( www.airfieldmodels.com ). A little more up front cost but works great. I was able to score a piece of scrap sheet metal and have it painted. Cost me a case of beer to have a co-worker shear it to size and paint if for me but well worth it. You can make various jigs and hold downs to make building lots easier.

I use a couple of coats of polish on top of my build board. Like RagII, I use a magnetic build board. The wax prevents rusting and makes it easy to pop off any spilled glue.

I as well use a magnetic building board with all the home made fixtures. Since switching to one, I don't know how I built without it.

How about cork laminate flooring.Would think it would be soft, yet durable enough
