"Dirty" OS-10
Hello all, any info out there on how to clean a varnished engine?? shaft wont turn, throtle stuck..very sad indeed

RE: "Dirty" OS-10
Warm it up slightly with a heat gun, or in the oven.
Warm to the touch plus a tad should do it. Then lubricate all over every place there's an opening. Remove the plug, attach a prop, and turn to suit. |
RE: "Dirty" OS-10
Put it in a crockpot full of anti-feeze overnight, on the low setting, outside.
Soak in "PB B'laster" overnight. AS A LAST RESORT: Take it apart, and manually clean it, expect to buy new bearings if it's a ball raced engine. If these don't do it, nothing will. Jetts |
RE: "Dirty" OS-10
To get it loose, pop it in a 200 degree oven for a few minutes and gently try it until it breaks loose. A little WD-40 or Marvel won't hurt. Now, take it apart and soak in the 50/50 antifreeze mix in the cheapest crock pot you can find. $5 at Goodwill? Take it out and rinse with plenty of clean water, dry it in a warm oven, oil lightly and reassemble. BTW, ATF makes a good pickling oil. Label the crock pot and for goodness' sake don't ever cook in it!

RE: "Dirty" OS-10
Make sure you cover your crock pot if it is outside or anywhere that animals can get into it. Animals, cats, dogs, will drink anti-freeze as it tastes sweet to them. It kills them slowly as it is poison.

Do you put the carb in too?

RE: "Dirty" OS-10
Best to remove any rubber O-rings or other rubber/fiber parts, but then, yes.

RE: "Dirty" OS-10
Remove all the o-rings and wash with laquer thinner, it will dissolve the varnishing almost instantly. Use an old toothbrush to scrub in the cracks and crevises. Reassemble and lube it good with a light weight oil.

RE: "Dirty" OS-10
I save that 1/2 in. of fuel left in the fuel jug, pour it into one jug, for cleaning engines. I have a nylon tub with an airtight lid on it. Leaving the motor in for a couple of hrs. will usually loosen it. Dismantle it let it soak for another couple of hrs. and scrub it with a brass wire brush. will look like new.

RE: "Dirty" OS-10
If it is varnish, try using good 'ole glow fuel. I have freed several varnished engines like this. It worked for me!
