Modified Dremel Accessories for RTX

1 Attachment(s)
I have been evaluating a Black & Decker RTX versus Dremel and I think that the RTX delivers more than double the power and has much higher reliability for prolonged usage. The common complaint on Dremel multi-speed tool is the variable speed switch tendency to go intermittent. The good point about Dremel is the variety of superb accessories that RTX doesn't offer. I have combined the best of both worlds be adapting Dremel accessories for RTX use. This includes the flex shaft, right angle attachment, and my latest modification, the drill press (see photo) ! These three accessories probably constitute all that is necessary for RC building. Any RTX users needing help, I'll be glad to !................ :p

Since there were a number of enquiries on the conversion kit for the Dremel drill press for the RTX, I'll just post the details here for the benefit of those interested. Well, all you need are two items to retrofit the drill holder as shown below. The body diameter of the RTX is slightly larger and you'll need a longer screw to replace the upper holder screw. Use a 5-40 screw 1-1/8 inch in length (you can buy something longer and use your RTX cutting wheel to make it shorter) that fits the original nut. Then you'll need to fabricate an aluminum adapter to fit the front of the RTX to the bottom part of the holder. I got a machinist pal to make one for me. The outer dia. is 30.5 mm, thickness 10 mm, and just ask the machinist to cut an internal thread that matches the front part of the RTX. That's it ! Good luck............ :)

The aluminum adapter seems to be something that is a little hard to create. I don't have an RTX or a Dremel drill stand in front of me to examine myself, but can this be done without the adapter?

Hi Dave, not to worry. Any workshop with a basic lathe machine can make one for you easily at a reasonable price. I got mine done FOC :D

The problem is that I don't think I'll be able to find a machine shop anywhere near to where I live. Is there another way this can be done?

RE: Modified Dremel Accessories for RTX

Hi there,

I've been looking between the Dremel and B&D RTX as well.
I really like the idea of the "cordless" Dremel which will really come in handy for the field job compare to the corded one.
But I am more to the B&D RTX for it's quality and better support here over in Malaysia (i think)....

Do you think I could find a way to use the RTX outside without a wall plug ? Something like a batter pack or something ....... ???
Will the RTX flex shaft affect it's performance ?
Will most of Dremel tool and bits fit the RTX ?

Finally, can a rotary tool cut Carbon Fiber and Fiberglass ? If so, what are the accessories that I need ?

Any help will be very much be appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Austin, I don't think there a cordless version for the RTX. Use an extension cord :D

For cutting CF and FG, use the diamond cutting wheel Dremel #545

Yes, all Dremel tools will fit the RTX
