polyurathane
Is regular polyurathane fuelproof. I know that the water based is, but what about the oil based?
Thanks CHris |

There is a continuing debate on the polyurethane question. Most opinions seem to be that the regular (not water-based) is more fuel resistant, but yellows. Some have claimed that the water-based is resistant and does not yellow. Still others say you have to use the floor finish grade water-based to get fuel resistance. My advice is to experiment with your finishing techniques and whatever you want to try on some test panels. I know that's not the answer you wanted, but the RC forums have been all over the park on this question. The reason I know is that I did an all-water finish on my last model. But it only had to be diesel fuel resistant, not glow fuel resistant. I have been reluctant to put any glow fuel on it just to experiment. But when (not if) I crash it, I'll give it a try. For what it's worth, I used Varthane Diamond Floor Finish water-based clear satin on a warbird-type plane. I'll try to attach a pic. Good luck, Dzl

Do think Minwax Oil-based poly is ok for painting my firewall? Or should I just use epoxy?

Frankly, if you aren't going to do a test on some scrap plywood simulating the firewall, just use the epoxy. You know it will work. Good luck, Dzl
