Confused on Clear Coating Latex
 

I want to spray minwax polyacrylic satin clear over a warbird painted with flat latex exterior paint. I know this subject has been discussed in several different threads but when I read these threads they seem to be conflicting. Some threads state that minwax polyacrylic water base satin clear is gasoline proof and others state that its is not. I believe some of the confusion is caused by the general use of the word "fuel." So as not to cause further confusion I am asking: Is minwax polyacrylic water based satin clear gasoline proof? If so, how long should it cure before attempting to run the engine?

I tried water-based Polycrylic as a final clearcoat on my latest plane and it softened and caused the latex underneath to bleed when I spilled some raw gas on the cowl. Made a mess. I cleaned it off, touched up the colors, and applied Minwax satin OIL-BASED and it's fine now, although it yellowed the white areas somewhat.
The water-based Polycrylic worked well for glassing, but don't use it as a final clearcoat. Use the oil-based as a final clear. I'm speaking from experience. I've used the Minwax oil-based clears for years on gassers with no problems. You just have to put up with the yellowing effect.
I would give it a couple of days cure time before subjecting it to possible gas spillage.

Thanks. I have some water based minwax but did not want to use it until I knew for sure if it could withstand gasoline. Have you ever tried the Nelson Hobbies flat clear over latex? I talked to Jerry and he said it could be sprayed over latex and it will not yellow and it cleans up with water. I am thinking about giving that a try but would like to hear if anyone else has used it.

This is my first time using latex. With my limited experience, these are things that I have found:
- You can use a blow dryer between coats to accelerate the drying time
- if you see a run just wipe it off with a damp rag (before the paint dries) and paint over the spot
- apply light coats drying the paint between coats
- denatured alcohol, Windex, and acetone should not be used to clean the surface after latex has been applied (they will melt the paint away) but prepsol is ok
- if you use an air brush the tips will clog so you have to clean them often will spraying
- a cheap $30 touch up spray gun from Lowes or Home Depot works great for spraying
- use a low tack masking tape over the latex

There are others that have been using latex longer and may have some more to add to the list.
