Smoke System

I'm wanting to add a smoke system to a plane. Is there a system out there that does not require a special muffler?

Depends on what kind of engine..2 stroke 4 stroke or gasser

OS 1.2 Four to start with. But why if a unit doesn't need a special exhaust would it matter?

Depends on the engine..Generally 2-strokes dont produce enough heat like the 4-strokes do so you need to pre-heat the oil some way by either using a smoke muffler or wrapping some brass tubing around the header or the engine head itself before injecting into the muffler. On my Saito 1.20 I tapped the header and wrapped the muffler with insulation and aluminium tape. It makes good smoke. Minnflyer gave me his setup...Main thing is you need to get the oil as hot as possible..

Im using a TME pump and I have a Don Harris on my gasser..Slimline makes a good one also.

An OS 120 should work fine with just about any commercial smoke system. You will need to drill a hole in the header (The steel tube that connects the muffler to the head) to add a pressure nipple. That is where the pump will dump the oil in, and it should be as close to the head as possible.

To use smoke in any engine all you need is a BCM smoke injector #PN 29003 taped into the muffler. Dennis

RE: Smoke System

Hi,

Does anyone know how to make color smoke?
Everyone has the white smoke and it looks good but I would like to know if there is a chemmical
or dye that I could add to the oil ( Im using the B&B smoke fluid right now) to make it smoke a color like red, or blue or anything for that matter other than white.

If anyone has done this or knows how to do it please let me know because there was 4 of use
with smoke this weekend and between all the loops and and twistes between 4 planes I lost mine for a coule of seconds because of all the white smoke LOL... also it would be cool just to have a differant color other than white.
Well if anyone could help me out that would be great.

P.S. If you could notify me at me personal email address which is [email protected]

Thanks,
Anthony

The only way to get a color other than white is to use commercially available Pyrotechnic-type smoke-bombs.

I heard someone mention a while back about smoke colours.... im pretty sure one guy used diesel fuel oil mixed with a small amount of food dye.. you can buy it in the supermarket. The best smoke fluid i have seen used for white though' is diesel and transmission fluid mixed 50/50, gives a really deep white/grey smoke. Also instead of the food dye, I beleive you can use ink from pens, like a biro, just cut the tube and get the ink out, a few drops in the oil should soon change its colour. I have never seen it used myself but might be worth a try ?

Slimline sells a check valve as part of the pieces needed for their recommended set-up. I've bought 'em from them directly.
