Glow engine on glider
If one had a glider or an electric glider, how could you attach a glow engine to the nose (permanently, not a power pod)
Any build alongs or online instructions how to convert it to glow, how to chop off the nose cone and glue in a motor mount. I like the idea of a glider with a .10-.15 glow engine and a small 1-2oz tank for launching. Of course the static prop will create drag after the engine is stopped, but it would be a fun experiment and a handy way to launch the glider. I'm thinking: a short 1 minute climb before engine runs out of fuel and glide back down. |

It's quite practical.. a .15 with 8x4 is ideal on the normal 2M glider.
Put the prop where the nose cone ends on the glider, and measure back the engine and engine mount length. Cut there. Make a firewall to fit from 1/8" real ply and epoxy in place. Go fly! :) |

I did it with a Norvel 074 which pulls nice with a 7*3 . It is better on the glow fuel than a 10 or 15 and I was able to get powered flights of 8 to 10 minutes on the 2 oz tank.
It was a two channel glider and I added a servo near the back of the canopy to take over the exsisting elevator and rewired one of the front servos to run the throttle. This was a two meter sailplane from the house of balsa. Good luck. I gave mine away to a friend so he could get hooked in our hobby. Eric |

I've got a Goldberg Electra that I converted to a .10 glow power just like Paul mentioned.
Add a firewall and engine mount and a two oz tank and you're ready to go. Plus, it's a lot lighter than a standard Motor/Battery pack. |

I'm assuming you do not use a throttle...it is just WOT for the tank.....correct?

I have a Norvel .074 w/throttle flying a Sig Ninja, and have had several 2-meter sailplanes mounted with .049s. I also have a 56" Astro Mini Challenger converted to Norvel .049 glow...I run 3 shims and 15% fuel with a 8 X 4 cox prop at 7500 rpm and it can climb straight up. You don't need the weight and drag of a .10 to loft a 2-meter. .049-.061 is good. A Norvel .074 is almost too much, unless you're flying it as a sport plane instead of a sailplane. If you're using a .10-.15, I'd suggest a 3-meter bird. I once tried a Magnum .10 on the nose of my Wanderer, and didn't like it. It was too much power, and especially too much weight...Totally killed the plane's ability to thermal in the light to moderate lift we have around here.

WOT on a two-ounce tank would have the plane out of sight in 45 seconds, with a couple minutes runtime remaining! Throttling back to a slow cruise or just turning the motor off works well. |

I had a big 'ol Wanderer 99" with an OS .15 in the nose, three channels
with throttle....worked like a champ. ;) FBD. |
