Bending 1/4 inch metal rod.

Hello,
I am trying to make my tail gear out of 1/4 metal rod.
How can I bend it like the tail gear here... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=2821551 ?

I am trying to use pliers to bend it, but its not working.

Thanks

Whoops,
I made a bad estimate. I went and actually measured it. It's only a little bit more than 1/6th of an each.

Sorry

Use a wire bender in a bench mounted vise (recommended ) or the bench mounted vise by itself.

I would suggest having a couple of 2' - 3' lengths of heavy duty pipe to put over the wire/rod to bend it as well as some hammers (seriously ).

A couple of heavy pliers will be able to bend wire up to 1/8" with a bit of effort. But a vice makes it a lot easier.

Cheers.

If you don't mind spending a few bucks, this liitle tool will really help out. You can bolt it down to the end of your bench.

If you can not spend that much. It works but does not have the ability of the big one.

I usually bend the 1/16" with a couple pairs of pliers. When it gets 1/8" or bigger, I heat it with a propane torch. It'll bend like butter. But you then have to re-temper the piano type wire at the bends to make it hard again.

Enjoy,

Jim
