Attaching canopies

The question of attaching canopies comes up from time to time. I found this thread that shows an elegant and simple way to attach and blend a canopy into a painted finish. You can also do the same method, Monokote up close and paint the junction. Although Sparky will drive up from St. Louis and pound me for suggesting Monokote.....

I am a chicken with canopies and Epoxy.
I use a THIN CAREFUL smear of silicone rubber on the mating surfaces after painting.
If it is not OK, no sweat to re-do.

Yeah, Sparky's building will give you a quick inferiority complex. And he's fast. The Ares in the canopy thread was built from plans to primer in a little over a week. It's an I-beam wing so it has around 100 individual strip ribs. I guess he doesn't have anything else to do.

I don't either.

By comparison, you would think I am on life support.

Sparky is a master Harley mechanic/builder. Has been in a few of those televised master craftsman series of builds on Discovery channel. And to quote him." I'll sleep when I'm gone' thats how he gets things done.

RE: Attaching canopies

I've molded canopies in before when I used to use paint. They did fine.

But you need a air vent for your canopy and you need to keep your canopy shaded and out of the sun when not flying. It doesn't take much heat on a black canopy like the one in the link to melt an area of it.

Anymore I use the button head Great Planes #2 X 1/2" Sheet metal screws and R/C 56 on top of the Monocoat.

Enjoy,

Jim

Or get a little dust inside the cockpit that clings to the canopy.
