probably an old trick
While building the wings for my Lanier Giant Stinger I happened upon a great idea. I didn't want to dig the holes in the wing for the FMA servos to go into. I dug out my old Weller soldering gun and removed the tip and replaced it with a paper clip I bent to the exact size and shape of the servos, much to my amazement the paper clip got just hot enough to cut out the most beautiful servo holes you ever saw. Not only are the holes neat but the foam is sealed and does not crumble like a dug hole would. Probably an old idea but I had to share.

probably an old trick
It is an old idea but it sure doesn't hurt to post it once in awhile for those that don't know about it. If you want exact depth put some wheel collars on the wire, measure up to where you want and then tigten them down. This gives you a guide for the depth.

The elmers ultimate and gorilla glue works great to glue the wood box down in there.

RE: probably an old trick
Yes, it is a great idea and it works well - BUT...
Styrofoam gives off toxic fumes when burned - be sure to do this work in a well ventilated area and don't get too close to the point of contact. |
RE: probably an old trick
i inserted the wire through a piece of lite ply (set at just the right depth) and then into my gun. the ply kept me from going to deep into the foam.

Music wire will work fine and produce a stiff cutting tool. Form it with shoulders and then make a plywood pattern for the cut out and hold it in place with masking tape. Works great for servo cutouts, landing gear mounting blocks, etc.
