Using epoxy over a CA joint?
I seem to remember something somewhere about not using epoxy over a CA joint, or was it the other way around?
I think that the reason is that epoxy won't cure if spread over a CA joint. I'm working on a laminated stabilizer for my Bridi Brown B-2, using CA to adhere the laminations. Then I want to cover the stab with glass and epoxy for a Klasskote paint job. Does anyone remember if this is true or not? Or do I even have it backwards? I just can't recall. Thanks, Bob |

Epoxy is OK you may have trouble with polyester resin which won't cure over several contaminates.

You're more likely to get a poor joint if you try to CA something over an epoxy surface. Many epoxy formulations contain a wax component that migrates to the surface as the resin cures. I believe laminating epoxy may be the major exception. Just to be safe, before I try to glue anything over cured epoxy, I will sand the surface where I want to make a bond, to remove the wax.
Laying epoxy over a CA surface has never been a problem for me--just make sure the CA is cured first. |
RE: Using epoxy over a CA joint?
I remember reading this in some legitimate magazine/book somewhere. I just wish I could remember what it was.... it wasn't an old wives tale or someone yanking my leg.
I hadn't planned on using polyester resin anywa (too strong an odor) but I want to make sure that my laminations don't come apart by something in the epoxy adhesive attacking the CA..... Bob |
RE: Using epoxy over a CA joint?
I think you are confusing CA with polyester resin.... Polyester Resin will not cure over epoxy at the recommended levels of catylst. Few people use Polyester resin anymore as Epoxy Finishing Resins have all but replaced their purpose... without the fumes.

Thanks DMyer, but I was thinking specifically of CA, not the bit with Polyester resin.
I wish I could dig that up again. I just don't want to have laminations fall apart in flight if I'm wring. Still and all, if not that many people are commenting on it, then it's not that big of an issue, I presume.. Thanks again for the comments though, Bob |
