Making Wing Fillets
 

Wanted to see if anyone had any tips on how to make nice even wing fillets. I am working on a sig kobra and was going to use prather micro balloons and epoxy to make some. Tried it before and was not overly happy with how they came out. Any tips from some of you pro's out there would be great. Products to use and method of doing it. Thanks

Hi!
Balsa first, then 24 hour epoxy (not the glue variety) mixed with brown microballons and 25-50g glassfiber cloth and then sanding...That's it!

I have found that if you mix micro-ballons with "finishing" resin, they are very easy to sand. If they are to be vary large, you need a balsa substructure first.

Jan's way is best and lightest. I glass the fuselage and then glue on balsa fillets. Normally I cut the fillet using whatever thickness of balsa is correct and use the root airfoil as a pattern. After the saddle area of the fillet is cut accurately I either trace the outline of the fillet on the wood or if it's a constant fillet (doesn't get larger or smaller from one end to the other) then I run it through my scroll saw with the blade at 45 degrees.

I glue that to the glassed fuselage with the wing in place. I use a micro-balloon/epoxy mix to make the wing saddle perfect. Now I sand the fillet to shape. After the fillet is shaped I glass it.

Sounds like a lot but it's not that difficult.

Go to F&M Enterprizes and look at their 2 part epoxy filler (That Blue Stuff) It is very light and works great fo fillets.
I lay a piece of tape down along the top edge and bottom edge of the fillet. Then mix up a very small batch of this filler and lay it in with my finger to smooth it out. Then take some rubbing alcahol and go over fillet to get a smooth surface and a even fillet. Then when happy with the fillet pull up the tape and you have a very stright edge and let it dry over night
