DYI RC workshop project
1 Attachment(s)
I've been a wood worker for many years, and love to design and build things. These are a few of my projects since starting RC flying recently. I can't fly yet, but I can build.
First, a simple CG checker. Hwy spend $30 for a balancing machine when all you need is just to pieces of wood with the bottom ends slotted to fit onto my 1/4" plywood fuse rest on my field box (which I also made myself). The top ends are rounded and covered with electrical tape to prevent scratching the wing covering. Store them in your field box drawer or workshop until you need them. Second, two pair of racks (two pics) to store size 40 planes in my tiny utility room workshop. The "arms" are mace from scrap 1/4" plywood fastened to pieces of 1x2 which are screwed to the wall. The fuse rack has one set of "arms" closer than the others, but the 2nd row will be for a seaplane with no landing gear hanging down to get in the way of the bottom one. Third, a work bench stand to hold the fuse while working on it. Again, it's made from scrap 1/4" plywood ends and bottom fastened to pieces of 1x2. A piece of 1x3 runs between the ends to add support. The edges of the plywood in all of my projects to hole plane parts are covered with pieces of 1/2" foam pipe insulation from Home Depot. |
RE: DUI RC workshop project
Do you have to be driving drunk to make these things, or did you mean DIY Workshop Project?
|
RE: DUI RC workshop project
....I can do them both, and at the same time....:)
....good work on the homemade stufff, this hobby is expensive enough. [sm=thumbup.gif] FBD. :D |
RE: DUI RC workshop project
Maybe he has more experience with DUI than DIY :D
|
RE: DUI RC workshop project
You got me...Yep, I did mean DIY, but of course, you all knew that. Just chalk it up to my advanced age and call it a "senior moment".

RE: DYI RC workshop project
Nice job on items that are needed for the hobby. It's great when one has and uses other hobbies that help support their other hobbies.:D
[>:] Darn, did it again, this reply was meant for cracker, yeh, I have those "senior moments "also.:D |
RE: DYI RC workshop project
Senior moments? I never have any of ... Now where did I put my glasses?
We're just giving you a good-natured ribbing of course. I love the CG balancer! That's a great idea, and so simple too! Welcome to RCU! |
RE: DYI RC workshop project
Some of my philosophies:
Don't be afraid to try something new, no matter how old you are (like flying rCs :)) Why buy it when you can build it (cheaper and usually better, not to mention More Fun) K.I.S.S. (the principal, not the smooch) |

Bill, AMA 4720 WACO Brotherhood #1 Oh, I can find tons of things.... Just not what I need right now. That little gremlin is a mind reader. He knows what I'm looking for next and he runs and moves the dang thing!!!!!!! It was happening to Minnflyer and myself when we were working on a project last week. Seems like no matter what we looked for that gremlin had moved it!!!! [>:] [>:] Ken |
RE: DYI RC workshop project
I always seem to get afflicted by the "reverse hallucination". That's when you don't see something that IS there! Like my Xacto knife ten seconds after I put it down. I then spend 10 minutes looking for it. When I get out my second knife, the first one magically appears where I apparently left it!

RE: DYI RC workshop project
Bax,
Thats blackholes. Learned all about it on the science channel a few weeks back. The come and the go just like tools and parts. So now I have duplicates of lots of tools. I threw the gremlin in one of the blackholes. Hopefully he exited someplace else. Edwin |
RE: DYI RC workshop project
Ah, the ol' "reverse hallucination", I wondered what it was called. Seems like I do that quite frequently, it is rather frustrating. Like the "special place" so I'll remember where it's at, I seem to forget the special place . It's amazing how I can look right at something and not see it. The wife says I have "selective hearing", could this be migrating to my eyes?:D
|
RE: DYI RC workshop project
I have that problem too Bax. But usually, after spending 10 minutes going crazy looking for something I find it in my left hand! :D

It always amazes me how I can be sitting at the bench, set down my knife and pick up a sanding bar, then need the knife again only to spend the next 5 minutes looking for it. I know it's on the bench within arms reach, but just where the *(U&#$(& did it go?????
Back on topic, here's a really simple addition to my shop, a wing stand. Scott |
RE: DYI RC workshop project
I thought I would be smart and hide my wifes anaversery gift in the shop, she never looks in there and wouldnt know where to begin. It was some diamond ear rings. (TONS of brownie points) I was paniced for about a day cause I couldnt find them. Wont do that again.
